Upgrade from 7800GTX 256MB to 3870HD?

Hi, I am thinking of upgrading my video card of Nvidia 7800 GTX with 256MB to an ATI 3870HD with 512MB. Will I see more meat from this upgrade? Or wait?

As for the ATI 3870HD video cards that are out. Should I care which brand I go with? Or just go for what is available and priced lower?

Please advise.

8800GT 512/256 would be a much better choice than 3870HD.

8800 GT if you can find one @ around 250, if not just get a 3870

Well. Over here, the 8800GT 512MB are priced around $289.00+ and the 3870HD are around $239.00+, so that is about $50.00 diff. Is worth getting the 8800GT for that price difference? With the 3870HD, does the brand matter? The Asus onces are more expensive, but specification wise, its the same as the rest. So, should the brand matter?

it get visontek if you can, they are the only ati partner i can find who offers more then a 1-2 year warrenty on their gpu's.

Almost all 3870 makers only have a 1 years warranty, but visiontek has a lifetime warranty (EXACTLY the same as EVGA's I believe). I jumped on an HIS for 225 on launch day, but if I could have waited I would have bought a VT.

You will see a huge jump in performance from a 7800 to a 3870. The 8800gt is a little bit faster than 3870, probably 20% or so faster in older games and 10% + faster in newer ones. The fan is much better on the 3870 but it is dual slot. For me that was a positive but for many people it's not, so you make that choice.

I've seen a few 3850 512mb cards drifting into the market right now, too. Newegg has had those in and out of stock in the $200 range. Those should be 90% + the performance of a 3870 and most will probably even OC to 3870 speeds, so that could be a decent budget option if you can find one.

HD3870 versus 8800GT 512MB

3870 gives about 15% less performance than 8800GT. Both cards will destroy the 7800GTX hands down (if you look a couple of pages further in that article, you will see the 3850 256MB beats out the top contenders from the previous generation, the 7950GT and the X1950XTX--and that card is about 10-15% slower than the 3870).

20% sounds quite a lot to me but in real gaming situations you wont notice any diffrence between the 2, id get the ATI 3870 and save $50 and have pizza.....lol

Also the ATI card is DX10.1 and SM 4.1 although people will tell you that means nothing but i have hunch its gonna make a diffrence.
