Im looking at the 9800GTX but it doesnt seem to be that good of a deal based on specs and some benchmarks ive seen. Im playing on a 19" samsung LCD and 320mb of VRAM is doing well for 1280 but if I move to a 22" I know that 320mb isnt going to cut it in the near future. Any recommendations on what card I should get or more likely that I should wait until R700 or some truely "new" Nvidia cards.

I'd wait till you actually upgrade to a 22". Right now I'm running at 1680*1050 with the 8800gts 320mb and I'm still doing pretty fine in most games. Agreed, more vram will be needed soon, and I kind of hate it because I can't or don't want to buy it for another 9 months at least, but right now I'm not doing to shabby.

So hold out as long as possible, a 8800gt 512mb or 8800gts 512mb isn't that big of an improvement, especially not at 1280*1024. It also depends on how much you can sell your 8800gts 320mb for ?

I moved up from a 19inch 1280 x 1024 monitor to the Samsung 226BW 1680x1050 and I didn't see any performance drop. The 320MB is too little for high resolution textures and AA but the GTS runs everything pretty well. I would say its not worth upgrading unless you can sell the GTS and get a GT for very little.

hmm this is weird, i use a 320mb gts with my 24" screen, and all the games I play,(COD4, UT3, etc) are maxed out and they look great.

Im waiting for next gen. Screw 9 series

no, i thought it did, but it was bent pins on the cpu for one setup and bent pins on the cpu socket for the other setup.

It's definitely capable but most of these guys are graphics whore who need to turn up AA and high resolutions.

Crysis and World of Conflict are the only games that take a huge nose dive if you don't have a 512meg card.

wait for the "true" next gen stuff, none of the 9 series refreshes if you want the purchase to be worth it. IMO upgrading within the same generation for upper mid range cards+ will not be a good idea as later on, most of the time the card you upgraded to will not likely offer tremendous benefits in newer games, or make the game much more playable.

you did mention "but if I move to a 22" I know that 320mb isnt going to cut it in the near future" but i think you shouldnt upgrade if you dont need the performance yet, but upgrade when you actually do need the performance.

in the meantime try oc'ing the card if you havent already done so, the extra 100mhz or so on the core really helps.

It's better to buy the last gen stuff than constantly buying new updated stuff. You save a whole lot of money and 70% of the frame rates.

G92 was just a rehash of G80 at a cheaper process to make because buying last generation stuff was still expensive because of the 24 rop count and 384bit memory controllers.

True next generation stuff should be 32 rop card and 512bit memory card. Or at least as a tech I'm dreaming.

ATI/AMD needs to move on too. They are a whole generation behind now and still trying to push 16rop card as their flag ship with R700.

Except in this case, the "next-gen" cards debuted at prices about 20-30% lower than last-gen prices. So in this case "next-gen" was cheaper.

There are a couple of expensive next gen products out there, but in my opinion, they only exist because some people will blindly buy them simply because they exist. The only game that requires more than an 8800GT is Crysis and no video card out right now can handle it anyway. The performance gains over the 8800GT are trivial except in a very small set of high resolutions and settings.

Upgrading isn't really necessary unless you game at 19x12 or higher. And for 16x10 gaming, I really would stick to $300 and under solutions.

I read your whole post. Your first sentence summarizes the conclusion of your post easiest: buy last-gen hardware. I disagreed and stated my reasons.

Then I elaborated on another point...for the sake of the original poster.

You should try not being so self centered.

Self centered? You should take your own advice. You should try reading it again.
I'll hight light it for you..

what you said,

Still confused? I'll clear it up for you. G92 wasn't really next generation.

So you're recommending G80 over G92? Yeah, still confused.

The quote marks around "next-gen" indicate that I'm quoting nvidia.

I'll let you figure the rest out.
