Upgrade from Athlon XP 2000+

Hi,

I have a Presario 6410nx computer I purchased about six years ago. It has a 1.67 Ghz Athlon XP 2000+ according to the spec, and the "System"

I was wondering if I could purchase a faster Athlon XP to use in this computer. How can I tell what speeds my MB can take, and what compatible Athlons are available.

Can anyone guide me through this.

I just installed a new HD in it today - and it seems much spiffier - was wondering if I could economically do just a bit more.

I'm sure you could find a more powerful Athlon XP on Ebay, which should be compatible with your PC.

How much memory is installed? If you are running Windows XP, at least 1 GB would be good. Are you using the integrated graphics or is there a discrete graphics card installed?

Thanks for answering. I can use onboard graphics, but I am using a Radeon 9200 pro AGP (Diamond brand) with 128 megs of ram.

It has 512 mb of memory and is currently running Win XP Pro (came with Win XP home)

I could probably put in a bit more memory -- but I think that adding the processor would help most, since I mostly use it for web apps, so I don't have a dozen programs running at once, nor do I even try to do any serious gaming on this computer.

IMHO, upgrading to 2 or 3gb of ram would be far more beneficial to your system than any processor upgrade that system would support. And I believe it would make a very noticable difference in your system.

If you could get, say, an XP 2600+ for no more than $20/shipped, that might be worthwhile.

Adding another 512mb RAM would help, too.

They look to be around $40 rather then $20 -- I checked pricewatch and ebay -- unless you know of some other source.

There is a barton 2600+ which sells for about 20 but it uses the 333 fsb

Heh, I have a Thoroughbred 2600+ (266 MHz FSB) in one of my spare computers (coincidentally, a Compaq). While I can't compare it directly, I can tell you that overclocking an Athlon 1700+ from 1.4 GHz to 2.0 GHz does provide a noticeable difference in performance, so I'm pretty sure you'd see a similar difference with the proposed upgrade. Just as an example, the stock 1700+ could not play BF2 at all even on the lowest settings (the framerate was probably around 15), but after overclocking the game became playable.

But you will want to keep an eye out for how much you're going to spend on all of these upgrades. It may well be better to find a cheap complete system or package (mobo+cpu) on Ebay that has something like an Athlon 64.

Also I'm pretty sure your motherboard can only handle the 266 MHz FSB processors.

Time to start saving for a new PC. Sinking money into that isn't worthwhile in my opinion. Check the Hot Deals and deal sites for a good buy.

Second the ram upgrade, 512mb is seriously limiting your performance.

If you just want to upgrade that computer, here is what you do.

• Download CPU-Z (It's free and safe)
• Run the program and go to the Mainboard tab.
• Tell us what it says for Chipset. (This will tell us the maximum FSB your computer will support).
• Then you can find the fastest compatible CPU.

Also, getting just another 512MB RAM would help.
You definately don't need any more than 1GB total if you are not using Vista, playing games made before 2005, or doing heavy video/image editing.
(And make sure if you happen to get a 333 FSB CPU that your RAM is at least PC-2700, also called DDR333)

You may need to update your BIOS if you get a new CPU. Sometimes they list all supported processors for a computer but I don't see it anywhere on the HP website. But my CPU-Z method above should work.

Looks like the XP2600+ is the highest you can go CPU-wise.

Most RAM is 2X512MB sticks of PC2100



I think that for the money you would pay to max the RAM and CPU out you would be better served getting a start on a cheap AM2 board and CPU and retire that XP2000+...

You can use Sysprep to make moving over very painless.

Yeah I agree with most about the RAM. However, you could most likely do a new CPU AND 512MB RAM for under $50 if you look around.
