100% skip the 1060 3gb. If you're saying the 470 8GB is $215 AUD and the 480 is $345 AUD, i'd get the 470 and upgrade again in a couple of years. That's a lot more money for not all that much more performance going from 470->480

Thanks, guys. I have now decided to jump on the RX470. I'll look into overclocking it as well to maximise the potential.

I'm surprised there are more RX480 supporters (over the 1060) than I expected as most of the reviews out there seem to favour the nVidia.

Early launch reviews clearly favored the 1060, but AMD has gained quite a bit since then in driver improvements and tweaks. Not to mention (mostly) superior DX12 and Vulkan support. Today, in modern titles, they're effectively even. Promising stuff for the future of the 470/480.

470 should work well

For 480 vs 1060, they are similar in performance in the newer games and reviews, so its down to monitor support (freesync vs gsync) and price. The 1060 3gb is also limited in more than just vram so its slower than the 6gb version. Similar to 470 vs 480.

So if same price, its a toss-up between the two. 480 has more vram and supports freesync, but uses more power. In your case though it was more expensive than the 480.

The rx470 is pretty meh at that resolution...it cant even run most aaa 1080p games maxed out let alone at 1600p...a true upgrade would have been a gtx1070...

Based on reviews, it looks to be a decent performer at 1600p, depending on the game.

There is also the dollar factor to consider besides raw performance.

I went from a 6950 to a rx480 recently and I run 1200p. New games like Doom, Civ6, and Xcom2 work great at high settings. You'll probably have to go down to medium settings at 1600p, but it'll still be much better than your 7950.

If you can get the rx470 8gb at $215, go for it. However if you can't, then go for the rx480 for that bit of extra speed that you'll need. This will keep you satisfied for a couple of years then you'll need to upgrade again.
