I would suggest you read this thread: link. I personally don't do more than one thing at a time with my computer, ever, unless I'm downloading a large file, then I'll browse these fine pages while I download it. Oh, and not one of the games that I play even pretends to be optimized for dual-cores. That's why I stick with fast single-cores.

I personally wouldn't recommend going dual-core unless you're a multi-tasker. If you are, they'll change your (computing) life. If you aren't, then I'd suggest you read that thread.

For gaming you actually currently don't need to upgrade. Just OC.

Few months down the line or even 9months or so down the line get core 2 duo. Alternately get Dual Core Opteron 165 or X2 3800 and OC and live a long life.

Dual core = much better for video encoding/heavy multitasking.

X2 3800+ ftw

x2 3800+........2500-2700 MHz average OC...512 L2 per core........$150 shipped
Opty 146.........2700-2900 MHz average OC...1024 L2...................$122 shipped

You're going to need some good cooling too, these puppy's get hot.......

Akshayt is right about OCing your Venice, you may find out you have a gem on your hands. If you can get it to 2600, you don't need a cpu upgrade, put the money toward a fast video card....

XP-90 is good with AS5. It should be good with the above metioned cpu's to 2800-2900 MHz (depending on voltage) with a good fan on it, and good case airflow...

Your case airflow should be excellent with the 120's. Make sure your cable runs are clean to ensure optimum airflow. I would suggest OCing the Venice to 2600 and buying a 7900 GT for <$250. You'll have a very good performer that will get you down the road awhile....

For about $150, your getting a dual core cpu that can handle a variety of applications/games, etc.
This cpu plus other supporting components can last you a good while.

Bottom line: Your getting alot for your money.

He's got a Venice 3200+ already. For FREE he could have up to 2800 MHz capable cpu sitting in his hands and not be aware of it. I'd definitely find out where the cpu goes before shelling out bucks. If it turns out to be a gem, bigger bang for buck will come from a 7900 GT, especially after the OP described his usage requirement...

Ordered a opt 146 from Monarch 2 weeks ago and it does 3Ghz at 1.4V SuperPI32M stable. Had it at 3.1 at 1.425 SuperPi stable too but my memory wont go past 250mhz and I dont want the lower divider. This chip could probably hit 3.2 or 3.3 with more voltage. It was a CAB1E 0614EPAW.

I paid $119 and it's still that price at monarch.

i wouldn't bother with the 7900GT. it's a great card, but i think he can probably get by with a 6800GT until the DX10 cards come out.

the X2 3800 is a better buy than the single core opty. video encoding will be much better, and more and more games will support multithreading. If you OC the X2 it will be even better for gaming.

as for the AM2 vs. 939 question, just stick with socket 939. AM2 really has no advantage over 939 except for its Pacifica virtualization tech, which is not that useful for a home PC. Costs would also be much higher, since you'd have to upgrade a motherboard and memory and the processor, rather than just upgrading the CPU for a 939 system. if you're gonna upgrade everything, then you should be getting a Core 2 Duo anyways.

If it's new, then I'd say it's a good price. But if it's used, then it's probably a chip that won't overclock very well.
