Any advice is greatly appreciated. Gaming rig specifically preparing for FFXIV: A Realm Reborn. The rig I'm currently on can run it decently, but I figured I'd try to max out.

x6 1055t @ stock 2.8
2x gtx460 SLI
Sabertooth MB
1920x1080 monitor

1) Upgrade to best AMD cpu+gpu combo I can find now during sales (Vishera + gtx680 for instance)?

2) Wait around until March, when the game will probably drop, because something else is coming for AMD?

3) Just keep everything and OC the x6 because nothing else is worth it?

I'm willing to go around $500 for GPU(s), willing to OC but staying on air. What would you do?

Leave your voltage on AUTO and set the FSB to 250Mhz, and then keep your ram within spec.

Keep it untill something crazy gets released that you can afford.

Wait until the game came out and we had an idea of what its requirements and bottlenecks are.

The req's are reportedly the same as the previous version of the game (which came out in 2010), which I built my current system around:

  • OS: Windows® 7 32-bit/64-bit*
  • CPU: Intel® Core™ i7 2.66GHz or higher
  • RAM: 4GB or more
  • HDD/SDD: Installation: 15GB of free space; Download: 6GB of free space on the drive containing "My Documents"
  • Graphics Card: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 460 or better with VRAM 768MB or more
  • Sound Card: DirectSound® compatible sound card (DirectX® 9.0c or higher)
  • Internet Connection: Broadband or better (always-on)
  • Resolution: 1280x720 (32-bit) or higher
  • DirectX®: DirectX® 9.0c
  • Others: Mouse, Keyboard, Gamepad
So with 2 460's (and plenty of ram) I'm just in above the recommended, which of course ran the game fine but not maxed, which is what I'm going for now. From what I remember, the bench program released for this game wasn't that reliable as an indicator.

Wikipedia says:
The relaunch will carry over the original game's setting, lore and intended story, but incorporate a new client, graphics engine, server and data structures, a revamped interface, redesigned maps, more gameplay variations and additional story content.
Emphasis mine: The bolded things, in particular, could affect system requirements.

A PII is not as good as an i7 at the same speed in most cases. I would try overclocking what you've got now - it's free, after all.

I would think overclocking your current CPU and waiting would be the best advice. If you are planning to upgrade both MB and CPU though, I would not limit myself to an AMD system, especially for gaming. AMD may have new graphics cards out next year, but their CPU roadmap is kind of uncertain at the moment. Haswell should be out around the time you were talking about, and could be worth waiting for.

Edit: I am not familiar with that game, but those are pretty high system requirements, especially for a game that came out in 2010. Are the graphics really good??

Guess I'll just hang out then, see what comes down the pike next year and re-evaluate.

Thanks to all who chimed in.
