Hi,

im currently running a Q9400@3.3Ghz with a HD6870, still got a older 19" tft from hyundai so im running at a pretty low resolution 1280/1024. Bf3 is set to "low" in the graphics options.

on a 32player map the system goes below 30fps sometimes, which makes it quite unplayable.
according to the windows task manager the CPU cores are at around 80%, the gpu is running at around 60%

MSI Afterburner shows GPU usage at around 60%.

so this means i need a new CPU right?
Im asking because Battlefield 3 is quite a CPU hog according to tomshardware.

Any idea what a performance jump i will get from a i5-3570K?

you should see a significant improvement in gaming, since the 3570k has much stronger single and multi threaded performance. bf3 multiplayer loves strong cores, and the 3570k fits the bill....and thats just at stock! You can buy a $30 aftermarket cooler and overclock that cpu to 4+ ghz.

Given your low resolution and that the problem persists on low detail settings, I'd say yes your CPU is the problem. Generally speaking, the i5 3570K is about twice as fast as your Q9400 when both are stock. It's probably about 80% faster since your Q9400 is overclocked (unless of course you OC the i5 by an equivalent amount).

That doesn't mean that your game will run twice as fast, but a stock 3570K generally has no problem keeping the framerate above 60 assuming no GPU bottlenecks.

framerate did improve indeed, on low settings in can play very nicely now. the ingame fps counter seldomly drops below 60 now
it still varies, goes up to almost 150 and down to 60 again but most of the time im well above 60.
going to mid graphics and playing conquest on a 32players map sometimes feels not perfectly, but i can live with low.
the cpu upgrade did indeed kick ass, rip q9400.

thx for your input guys

"TFT" encompasses every LCD monitor out there, of which there are thousands. I think Aakshey wanted to know what model you had, or at least the general specs.

i'm using a q6600 OC to 3.2ghz with a hd 7790 video card 1gb and i play battlefield 3 on ultra settings and having 40-60 fps but i only play single player on a full hd resolution.
I think your resolution was a bit problem too, because low resolution makes CPU work more. And to have an idea, i put a GTX 660 with my q6600 and play Battlefield 4 , ultra settings, full hd resolution with 40-60 fps single player.
I really don't think newer games need more than 4 core CPU's, they need more GPU power. They say you need i5/i7 for current games....for what ? my cpu is 7 years old and still kick ass to newest games. Marketing is a bitch.
