Upgrade question- Need opinions

Current Rig

p4 3.0E (very disappointed)
asus p5gdc-v delux
1 gig ocx enhanced latency
leadtek 6600gt pcie

I want to get rid of this p4

and think i want...........

amd 64 3800+
asus a8n-sli

First off I really donthave the money for any of this, but my B-day is comin up and gonna hit up the parents for those two item above. Now if Sell my current mobo and processor and vid card I might get enough to get a 6800gt and I would be set or should I shoot for the 6600gt sli set up by selling just my mobo and processor. i could also just screw the amd board and just get a 6800gt for my intel board. Any thought on what you guys would think best. Im thinkin try to sell it all and get the 6800 gt with the sli board so i can always upgrade with another 6800gt in the near future when prices fall. Also do u think that the 3800 is not enough power for the sli?

I would like to play in high res, especially CS source aa and af dont really matter to me. I feel my p4 is really limiting me on my current rig

i'd get the dfi UT nf4 sli-dr for about the same money and a single 6800gt if you're buying now. that 3800 is alot of money man. thats all i can say on that, lol

I just had to make the same choice...

first I wanted to get an sli board + 6600GT and get another 66g when prices drop, then I figured most likely 6600GT price will remain more constant (due to it being mid-range) than 6800gt prices.

eventually I got an A8N SLI Deluxe + MSI NX6800GT (which cost me 70$ less than all other pci-x cards )

I would go with MSI SLI, 3200+ winchester(venice if it exist, and OC) and 6800GT.

I'd say bump the processor down to a 3200+, get an SLI board and a single 6800gt for now. With the money saved going down to a 3200+, you'll be well on your way to a second 6800gt.

A 3200+ with SLI 6800gts will be a much better performer than a 3800+ with a single 6800gt.

If a 3200+ seems to slow for you, a 3500+ is a good option too. I think going above a 3500+ right now isn't very cost effective. Better yet, wait for venice to come out and see how that changes things around.

Your computer is still very decent though... maybe just get a 6800gt for now and wait until you can get better bang for your buck from a CPU upgrade. You'll have the 6800gt for an SLI upgrade down the road that way.

Another card to look at is the ATI X800XL. There's no "SLI" for it, but if you're looking for a single card in the $300 range, it's a very good one. Depending on where you are and what the current deals are, it could be $100 cheaper than a 6800 gt but offer very similar performance. You wouldn't get the SLI option that you're looking for though.
