Upgrade question

Is it worth upgrading my friend's computer: Pentium cpu 120 mhz, socket 5 mobo w/ 200 w ps? He's complaining that it's too slow for email and to surf the net on rr.

:Q Wow, and I thought I put off upgrading for too long. Yes, I would say it is high time for a new computer. Even if he has virtually no money a used 450MHz CPU/mobo/RAM combo can be had from the forums here at Anandtech for ultracheap (~60 bucks) and will be a drastic improvement.

For under $300 he can get a P4 system that will o/c to 2.1G+. Or, if he doesn't want to overclock, for around $200 he could get a 1.5G Athlon XP system.

EDIT: I forgot, he will probably need a new case and power supply as well.

Thanks, EXP. I looked up the requirements for rr (at least 133mhz). Having the socket 5 indicates to me that he has an overdrive cpu. I'll probably rcmd that he upgrade to another mobo/cpu/ram/case and transfer his hd/etc.

Yes, everything must be slow with that PC. Besides the CPU, mobo, ram, You will problably also need to upgrade the video card as well. And the PS and case being that old, you may need a new standard case as well. You can probably just reuse the cd-rom unit, soundcard, and HD.

i would put your friend into a duron/tbird and get an ata 100 hard drive but it all depends on the work this system is used for

Seriously, have him upgrade and end the pain. He can build a system easily 8x as fast as that for under $500 and he'll notice the difference.

NO, ITS NOT WORTH UPGRADING your friend's computer. With a 120mhz proc, he probably has EDO ram, <24x CDROM, 28k modem, <2gig hdd & an AT case. At this point he's better off buying an entirely new system!! All he can keep from the old rig is the mouse, keyboard, floppy, & monitor.

But if he doesn't have the money, keep the CDROM & hard drive too, and look into integrated motherboards -either way you need a new case.

Dont even do that. That Hard drive must be freakin slow and small, probably around 1gb 5400 rpm? Buy EVERYTHING pretty much.
