Upgrade to 390x or 980Ti?

I right now have a GTX 780Ti and was thinking about upgrading to a 390x or a 980Ti and selling my 780Ti. The only reason I'm considering a 390x is because of the 8GB VRAM on the 390x even though it's slower then the 980Ti. Xbox One and PS4 have 8GB shared RAM and some PC games already can use more than 3GB VRAM if graphics are maxed out at 1080p or higher res, for example GTA V and Watch Dogs. I want a card with at least 8GB VRAM and my only choices right now are a Titan X, 390, and 390x, but Titan X I can't afford even after selling my 780Ti.

I would either wait for some next gen stuff (turn down a couple of settings so the current 3GB isn't an issue) or go with the 980ti. The 390x is a great card but there's no benefit with 8GB over 6GB even at 4K currently, at least in the numbers I've seen. A 390x won't be a great enough upgrade over a 780Ti to warrant the effort in my view.

Save for the extra VRAM an R9 390X is barely any upgrade at all over a GTX 780 Ti. Wait for the new stuff if you can.

When. I can pickup a Strix 980 Ti tomorrow for a $1K local, but if the new X80 Ti is coming in a month of two may as well spend a $1K on it instead.

980 Ti or wait until 2017 unless AMD or Nvidia release a big chip next gen card in late 2016

I'm kind of on the fence here. On one hand, the 980 Ti is an amazing card. On the other, a 390X and 100 bottles of Lagunitas Maximus might provide a better gaming experience.

I wouldn't even consider buying a $400+ GPU at the moment. New cards are being released around June and we're already April pretty much.

Just wait.

Really, imagine this is like the end of June 2014.

Do you really want to spend $650 on a top GPU, like the 780Ti back then, a few months before Maxwell's arrival? It would be obsolete before it had a chance to get dusty in your rig.

Polaris/Pascal is even a bigger leap due to the node difference.

390X should be almost on par with the 980, but like others are saying, I would wait for the next gen at this point, at least just to see what is available and possibly lower prices on last gen if the next gen doesn't live up to the hype.

Keep in mind next gen starts with the midrange, so 390X and 980Ti could still be options depending on the relative performance and pricing at the time. Still better to wait and see, b/c we don't have all the information on what is coming yet.

390X can be had for half the cost of a 980TI, at least in the US. Granted the 980TI is undoubtedly a better performer, but the 390X offers a better bang for the buck. Wait a few months till summer and these cards should come down further and price.

390X to a 980Ti is a horrible comparison since the two do not compete with each other.

The 390X cost significantly less than a 980Ti, and really competes with the 980.

But either way, if you can wait 3 months, do it.

Pretty soon the 390X will be performing on par with a 980ti or even better than it. As time goes on the line between the cards will blur and and 390x will likely end up faster for half the cost. But yeah at this point I'd wait regardless. 980ti only has a performance lead for now. It won't last.

If you think that will ever happen you're delusional.

He's talking about 980ti. when 980ti is 390x +30%. Nevermind OC models.

Just watch. 980ti will erode away into a pile of useless junk just like 780ti has been doing. 390x will remain respectable far longer. Based on recent events there is no other conclusion I should draw.

only way I see a 390X performing on par with a 980Ti is a game using Async Compute a lot and not having any way to disable it on the 980Ti

or some BS like what happened with GoW with the game being optimized for one vendor and ignoring the other
