Upgraded from Win2k to XP Pro...now I can't see my D drive

I decided to upgrade from Win2k to XP and I ran into some trouble. So I was forced to uninstall my OS and then install XP. Now I have a problem. I cant access my D drive at all. It has all my documents and files of that nature and if I can get into it then I have a big problem. When I double click on it I'm told that I cant access the drive. I cant find any security settings so I dont know what to do. Please help me out.

Because you had decided to upgrade, what do then mean that you were forced to uninstall your OS? When you're upgrading, you're upgrading, and nothing should be uninstalled. What kind of trouble did you run into?

When you can't access your D drive, which account are you logged into the computer as? If you're administrator, open your administrative tools, and select the Computer Management. When it opens, you should see which drives are present.

Until you've fill in more details, I'm not sure what else to tell you.

Not sure if your Win2k had NTFS. Read the article though.

if it says you dont have axcess to it. right click onit go to security and go to permissions and give permission to everyone and yull have axcess to it. this happened to me on my last reinstall took me 3 weeks to figure out what it was. mainily because i was so pissed at the thought that id just lost 40gigs of stuff i needed

Unless Win2k encrypts them automatically they are not encrypted. There is no option for security when I right click though. When I double click on the D drive it says D:\ not accesable Access denied. Maybe it was encrypted but I really dont think so. Any ideas?

well my solution is teh right one i just did a piss poor job of explaining it ill try again step by step. sorry bout that

right click on the D drive
Go to sharing
click on the security Tab
click the add button
add "everyone" and hit apply or OK whatever it is
it takes you back to teh previous screne
make sure that" everyone" has full axcess click teh box in teh window
hit OK
close teh window
should work then

When I right click on the D drive my options are as follows:

Open
Explore
Search
Format
Copy
Create Shortcut
Rename
Properties

Those are my only choices. I'm really at a loss and I have a lot of data on that drive that is important and not being able to recover it would be a very bad thing. I'm really hoping there is some way to get it all back.

when you go to Properties, what does it say?

what are you logged in as on WinXP?

There is something that you have to sometimes do to XP in order for the 'sharing' option to show up.

Unfortunately, I can't remember what it was.

Not sure where you're going with your train of thought, but this may be it:

Open an explorer window, right-click on your D drive. From the menu, select Properties. From the tabs, select Sharing.

Click the radio button to Share this folder. Make the share name as D$. The dollar indicates administrative purposes, so you shouldn't have to set Permissions. Comment it to whatever you like. Under User limit, leave it at Maximum allowed.
