running a q9450 @ 8x462.

i went from a skythe ninja 2 + 1 1000rpm skythe fan to a thermalright 120 extreme with 2 1600 rpm skythe doing the push / pull thing.

i also lapped both my cpu and the heatsink.

the results?

58-60 across all cores.

with the skythe ninja 2 + 1 fan + no lapping i was getting between 68-72 across all cores. wasnt too happy seeing 70c+ temps, i know that cant be good.

rought 10c drop, im impressed. not quite sure weather its the heatsink, fans or lapping, or most likely a combination of all, but regardless... i'm pretty happy with my results.

just thought id share.

vcore is at 1.39, pll at 1.58 and fsb term at 1.36 in the bios btw.

oh and those temps are at full load, using prime95.

and, the fans im using are s-flex 120mm 1600rpm by skythe. i was a little worried they would be overly loud, but in all honesty, not bad at all.

time to see if i can get 465x8 stable now

ciao,

tom3k.

Hey congrats! Nice work on the lapping too. Good to year you're getting a 12C drop on a Quad core from already 'good' cooling. I'd say you have about the best air cooling money can buy now - unless you were to add higher rpm fans to it.

frostytech does a fair amount of air-cooler reviews, I like there methodology because they use a standardized heat source.

Currently they rate the 120 extreme as third behind Sunbeam and xigmatech for cooling capability. current Top 5 heatsinks according to FrostyTech

Not that the 120 extreme is a slouch, but the best of the best for air-cooling are decidely these direct-contact HSF's (never had one myself, I'm a Tuniq120 guy).

I "upgraded" from a Ultra 90 Thermalright cooler to the number 1, Xigmatek S1283 and all I got was the same temperature, maybe 1-2 C more ( room temperature was the same ). I remounted it several times and reapplied AS5 and the outcome was the same.

I know someone with a Tuniq 120 that owns an E8400 oced to 4.1 ghz with quite about the same voltage I have and a room temperature some 8-10 C higher then mine and he gets 65 C opposed to my 70 C. How the hell is my Xigmatek number one in every review on the web ,I just don't get it!?

nah i tried a contact cooler.

There nice, but there isnt enough oomph in them to push a quadcore into high lvls.

I prefer a TRUE over a contact cooler any day.

Agreed error8. I saw you responded to my thread below...e8600 pulling 75c+ at load under OCCT and idling at 44 using the xigmatek.

I am not impressed but dont want to bother trying something else.

Used arctic silver and made sure I had good contact. Didnt lap though.

What is going on? Why the hype for this cooler?

By theway, does anyone know if a tuniq tower will work with the xigmatek mountain bracket? (uses screws, not pushpins)

I switched from a Tuniq to Vendetta 2 contect cooler and have to say it's about the same temp wise. But I only have a dual and lack any contact cooler mounting exp, so can't be definitive about this. Have to see how things turn out after I play around with diff mounting positions//TIMs. However, it is much smaller than my Tuniq. Also another tip is I replaced the dreaded push-in pins with a set of 775 bolt-thru that made the mount seem to be very secure.

They tricked Frostytech's thermometers too! They reported finding the xigmatek doing a great job cooling a 150W heater-block relative to the Ultra120 extreme.

Maybe they did a switcheroo, sent one set of units for the evaluators and then made a much cheaper and poorer performing product for the retail shelves.

How you mount an HDT makes all the difference, man. Try using the last technique on this page.

I don't know what to say. They seem to put too much thermal paste on the heatsink base and they let it spread by it self, I always do that with a plastic bag and make sure it's perfectly spread.

I remounted this cooler 4 times until now and the temperatures are the same. It might be the weak 1500 rpm 120 mm fan that the cooler uses. But I also tried an 2000rpm Antec fan and there was only 1 C or so difference and didn't matter for the amount of noise it was making. I guess that this is all this cooler can do.

Too bad I didn't get a True, since it was only a couple of dollars more or even better, I should have kept my Ultra 90.
