Upgrading 7900GT

Hi everyone. I currently have an nVIDIA 7800GT w/256MB in my system. I'm contemplating upgrading this to an nVIDIA GeForce GT 240 512MB 128-bit GDDR5. It's only $85 at newegg:

How much of an upgrade would this card be, would it be worth it? I've tried to do some research on this, it's hard to compare such an older card, but I've found some relevant results. It seems the 240 would be 2x faster than the 7800 when looking at Crysis frame rates, but again; it's hard to find real comparisons to an older card like this. Anyone have any input? I def. want to stick with nVIDIA GPU.

You're right, it is hard to compare two cards from such different time frames. Suffice to say the GT 240 (which sits between an HD 4670 and 9600 GT in speed) would be a lot faster under ideal circumstances, but if your CPU is really marginal you won't see as much benefit.

at $85 you might as well go for the HD5670. It outperforms the 240 in everything, an is lower power and lower heat, and comes at around the same price

In the low end I'd look at previous gen nvidia cards. A lot of them are faster than the 240 since they share the same chip as the 250, but because of consumer confusion have lower prices. Look at 8800s, 9600s, and 9800s and see if any are in your price bracket. They will be faster than the 240 you were considering though post if it's a 9600 since they have different versions of that.

Also look at 4670+ from ATI. I've seen the 4770 at $85 before so if you can get one of those it will murder the 240 in terms of performance.

What games are you playing, what resolution is your monitor, and what CPU and how much RAM do you have? If you're planning to keep the card for awhile I'd strongly consider something more powerful, like at least an R5700-series card, especially if you want to play graphically intense games. I think getting a GT 240-class card today, if you're planning to use it for awhile, is setting yourself up for unacceptable experiences in newer games.
