My parent's PC recently broke:
I have discussed with them the best way to spend to fix this, and we have decided that we should simply upgrade the computer.
Here is what they have now:
AMD Athlon64 2800+ socket 754
2GB DDR400 OCZ RAM (2x 1GB)
DFI Lanparty-UT NF3-250 (this is what is broken since last week)
ATI 9800pro 128MB 256bit AGP
WD 120GB SATA drive
dual optical drives
3com nic
Large ATX Antec tower
Antec Truepower 430W (the first generation, when they were good)
So now I will upgrade their computer to core 2 duo:
Intel Core 2 duo E4300 255$CAN
2GB DDR2-667 OCZ XTC RAM (2 x 1024MB) 250$CAN
MSI P6N SLI-FI 160$CAN
EVGA E-GEFORCE 7900 GS KO 200$CAN
keep the old WD drive
keep the optical drives
keep the nic
keep the tower
keep the PSU (I think it will work, 420W 26A of +12v)
The motherboard's manual says it will work with 20pin PSUs, and the video card comes with an adapter for the PCIe power plug.
So as you can see they were stuck with the s754/DDR/AGP kind of hard to upgrade computer, so I couldn't find an upgrade cheaper then about 860$
I will probably change the RAM to 533mHz, I put 667mHz in simply for better overclocking, because I plan to overclock the CPU by at least 20-25%.
So here is my question: Does this setup looks good considering the goal is to build a cheap but high performance gaming PC? What would you change?
