I am setting up my new Alcatel Idol 4S GSM Windows 10 phone. Yesterday, I backed up my previous Windows 10 Mobile phone, a Lumia 640LTE. Today, I cut down its SIM card from microSIM to NanoSim dimensions and transferred the 128GB SD card to the Alcatel and installed the cut-down SIM. Don't know if it was a good idea but I elected to Restore the 640LTE's backup to the Alcatel instead of "starting with a clean slate," as the Alcatel gave as an alternative suggestion.

It took maybe 1/2 hour for the Restore, but I immediately got this head scratching message:
-------------------------------------------------
Delete other apps? This SD card has apps from another phone installed on it. To move apps to the SD card, the other phone's apps must first be deleted. Do you want to delete the other phone's apps from the card?

[Yes] [No]
-------------------------------------------------

What's that about?

There's maybe 20GB free right now on the card. Most of the used space is MP3s, most of which I can delete with no problem. I don't figure the message concerns free space. What exactly is the issue? It had said it would be updating/restoring apps in the background as long as I had wifi, but then this message comes up which I don't comprehend.

Whenever you do a "restore' on Windows Mobile, it still has to re-download the apps. I'm guessing the phone is seeing the install information from the old phone on the SD card. I would think it would be ok to delete the old information, unless you have apps installed that aren't available in the store any more. You could always make a copy of the SD card before doing anything though.

Yeah, I actually am wishing I had another 128GB microSD card and I'd do just that. I could/can copy the card to a HD, and I suppose restore that to the card if I have a notion that it would be a good idea.

Funny thing you mention apps that can't be restored because hey aren't available in the store anymore. My favorite app right now (Accuweather) is just about the only one that wasn't restored!!! (Dang!). There's a "new" version, and I downloaded that but at first look it seems to be quite a bit different. For one thing, it's got ugly obtrusive ad stuff going on. They want me to pony uo $ for enhanced versions... around 4 of those available and they don't show how much mullah you have to pay until you click [Buy now]. The cheapest appears to be the no-ads version which is $1.99. I'm not biting... yet. I have a handful of other weather apps, don't know exactly how they compare, they're all different. My favorite was Amazing Weaher HD, which I paid a couple bucks for around 3 years ago but they abandoned support saying in a blurb, "Windows Mobile isn't the stallion it used to be." So, it no longer works. Accuweather in its old version (no ads!) is still working on my Nokia 520, but my SIM is in my new Alcatel, so I need wifi to get the app on the 520 (which has it's own 32GB SD card). The Lumia 640LTE (with it's bad headphone jack) had Accuweather on it but it was on the 128GB SD card, which has been moved to the Alcatel, so it's unavailable on the 640LTE.

Don't know why the old version of Accuweather doesn't work on the Alcatel now because it was on the 128GB SD card. The icon is there in Start but it's greyed out. Yeah, I suppose it's not available for download now but it is (or was) on the card so why doesn't it work?

That dialog that I described in detail in the OP with the Yes/No choice disappeared when I tried to access something else on the phone. I didn't answer either way, pending this thread developing. I checked the settings and right now everything is setup to save to the SD card except for new apps, which are to go to the internal memory, of which there's quite a bit unused (over GB). I haven't changed that... yet. Like I say, I can delete 50++ GB from the SD card to make room, no problem. It's almost all MP3s that I have backed up elsewhere.

The way I understand it, as long as you used the same e-mail address, then the app still should be able to be downloaded.
The ones on the card have been DRM'ed, but, it should be unlocked again as long as it was the same account--at least in theory.
I think there is also a "restore" option in one of the settings menu you may be able to use as well.

When I reset my Nokia Icon, it re-downloaded everything, then updated everything. Took about a day to get it all working again and I didn't really have that much stuff except pictures on one drive.
