Upgrading from 6770 to either RX 460, GTX 1050 or RX 470

So, my 6770 from February 2012 finally died, I am surprised that it even survived so long.

Not exactly a casual gamer but in my country, gaming can get really expensive.

Bought the 6770 for 7000 rupees (140 USD based on the 2012 exchange rate, the value of 7000 inr has reduced to 100 USD based on the current exchange rate).

Been looking for another similar card at the same budget, unfortunately never found it.

CPU - Intel G3250
Power Supply - Antec VP450P
RAM - 8 GB
Resolution - FullHD (1080)

Now, because I am desperate, I am just loosening my purse and was deciding between the

1) RX 460 (MSI 2GB)
Price - INR 9640 (141 in USD)

2) RX 460 (Sapphire 2GB Dual-Fan)
Price - INR 9820 (144 in USD)

3) GTX 1050 (ZOTAC NON-MINI 2GB)
Price - INR INR 9600 (141 in USD)

4) GTX 1050 (MSI 2GB)
Price - INR 10100 (148 in USD)

I mostly play old games, which are 75% off on Steam. I am not proud of this but I sometimes play the occasional latest pirated game too which will eventually be bought 2 to 3 years later when on sale.

Not exactly a fanboi, but I prefer AMD because of the awesome experience I have had with the previous card. My last Nvidia card was the 6600 GT (stuff of legends but failed within 3 months and the service center wouldn't replace it, it was an ASUS).

Between the RXes, Reviews have said that the MSI version is both cool and quiet, not much reviews on the Sapphire Dual fan version, I am leaning towards to the Sapphire one though.

The card will most probably be used for another 3 years minimum (the full warranty term - unless I get a windfall), 4 years preferably. It is for that reason that I want the RX 460 over the GTX 1050 (Nvidia is rumoured to gimp old cards, also terrible in DX12) unless someone can convince me otherwise.

I also want to move up a level if you good people think it is VFM.

Well.. the RX 470 costs

1) RX 470 Sapphire 4GB Dual fan - INR 16000 (234 USD)
2) RX 470 MSI ARMOR 4GB - INR 16800 (246 USD)

Wild Card Entry - MSI GTX 1060 3GB - INR 17300 (254 USD)

In the AMD side, the Level One cards cost around 140 USD and Level 2 Cost around 230 USD so is the 90 USD extra worth the performance of the L2 cards? I was planning to get a new card on Monday (16th Jan) but if I am to pick a L2 card, I will have to wait till the 1st or 2nd week of February, meaning - a wait of another 3 to 4 weeks. While waiting will be tough, I don't mind doing so for an investment that I expect to last at least 3 years.

Also, opinion on the GTX 1050 and GTX 1060 (3GB version), how do they fare against the RXes in their respective level? Willing to switch camp if the GTXes make more sense.

I know my CPU is a HUGE bottleneck, I'll be upgrading once the reviews of Ryzen are published, but if not Q2, I am definitely upgrading around Q4.

Thanks for reading.

PS: I am from India.

The RX 460 is a no go, its the worst performing card and its just very poor across all games. You'd be better off to go for a R9 380 or even previous gen R9 280x and you will get a lot more performance.

The 1050 is not much better either, but it is better than the 460, don't you have 1050 TI there? Its at least quite faster than the 460 and 1050. The RX 470 is up to 70% faster than the 1050, on average it will be about 50% faster.

So overall the RX 460 is garbage, its usually about 10% slower than the 1050, sometimes even slower. The 1050 ti 4GB is faster than the 460 and 1050, but I don't know if you have it there. The RX 470 is usually 25% faster than the 1050ti though.

I mean if you can stretch out and afford the RX 470 its worth it over the others and it would definitely last you 3-4 years, while the other options are going to start to struggle in that amount of time!

We have the GTX 1050 Ti but the physical store I am getting it from says that it isn't worth it.

ZOTAC GTX 1050 Ti
Price - INR11950 (175 USD)

MSI GTX OC 1050 Ti
Price INR 13000 (190 USD)

The salesman recommended that I pick between the RX 460 and 1050 or the RX 470.

In this case that was good sales advice, you'll get a lot more out of a 470 in the long run than any of the other cards, especially if you will keep it many years.

I would avoid 2GB cards, so I suggest not going RX 460 2GB or 1050.

RX 460 4GB is the value choice you should be looking at. It's roughly at 7870/R9 270/270x levels of performance or GTX 950 if you prefer. It is trading punches with the 1050, but with 2GB it is a no go.
1050 Ti is closer to GTX 960 and R9 280/280x/380/380x and has 4GB VRAM. Might be a worthwhile choice if the pricing is all messed up and it ends up being as much as an RX 460 .

RX 470 is really nice, I'd say go for it since you're planning on going Ryzen soon, it'll make for a great system that will last you long. It is way faster than any of the previous cards, it's almost twice as fast as either RX 460 or 1050. If I had to compare it with previous gen cards, these would be R9 290/290x/390/390x and GTX 970.

I'm from India too, i would recommend either 1050Ti 4GB Zotac with extended 5 years warranty or Sapphire rx470 4gb. Don't get rx460 and 1050 because 2gb is already not enough at full hd.
You definitely need 4gb minimum. So either rx470 or 1050Ti

RX 470 has potentially more room for growth with improved DX12 and Vulkan titles in the upcoming years, while the 1050ti mentioned here is probably at it's peak of performance:

http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1050-Ti-vs-AMD-RX-470/3649vs3640

The 460 and 1050 are not good deals, since they are half as powerful as an 470 (and a good sapphire rx 470 model gets near reference rx 480 performance), yet cost more than half of the 470 price. Usually this would be the other way around.

RX 470 overpowers the rest here and will allow you to play decently @1080p in a wider variety of titles. But if the price is too much, I see nothing wrong in going with the 1050TI either.

I'd say go for the $141 1050 and play on medium settings. That CPU isn't going to get you all that far in modern games anyway.

470. No joking. Is the best card of the bunch, including the 1060 3GB which doesn't deserve to be called 1060.

I would definitely go with the 470 if you are planning to upgrade the cpu. Otherwise just get the cheapest of the cards, as any of them will be more than enough for a pentium. Obviously a 480 will be faster, but the difference is not that large compared to the 470, and the 470 is far from underpowered. It is a lot faster than any of the other cards you listed and will be a huge upgrade from a 6770.

470 is the best choice of the options.

My PSU only has a 6-pin power connection. The 470 cards listed are 8-pin.

Going for the Zotac 1050 (gives me a 5 year warranty too).

Kind of disappointed by this.. I know I can get an adapter but I guess this the universe telling me to stick to my budget and get the 1050 or 460.

Thank you very much everyone, I was definitely going for the rx 460 because of all gimping rumors and I am also AMD fan but I think I will get the 1050 instead after listening to everyone recommend it.

By the way, AMD has Frame Rate Target Control that helps reduce power consumption and heat while playing old games, does Nvidia have a similar feature? Googling only shows an software by EVGA called Precision X and a feature called 'Adaptive Sync'.

Hopefully, you mean the 1050ti and not the vanilla 1050.

See if you can find any XFX RX 470 cards around, they all use a single 6-pin power connector, so that should be fine for you!

I don't know of any 8 pin 470 cards. You mean 480s? It is common for 480s to have 8 pin connectors, but not 470s.

In case you are still thinking about this, there are a couple of rx 470's that come with a 6pin:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202230

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...6124&cm_re=rx_470_asus-_-14-126-124-_-Product

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...m_re=rx_470_powercolor-_-14-131-705-_-Product

Maybe you can find those near you, the sapphire blower model is the cheapest rx 470 in many countries and is pretty widespread.

If you plan to keep graphics card for 5 years, you will definitely regret going for 2gb 1050, so spend a little extra and get 1050Ti 4GB.

Get the 1050ti over the 1050. Avoid the RX 460 and GTX 1050 at all costs. Get the 1050ti 4GB if you don't want to spend too much money for the RX 470.

Guys, the 1050 Ti was 14,000 (205 USD), the Sapphire RX 470 (blower one) was unavailable.

In the end, bought the Zotac 1050 Mini, I know I was completely against the Mini version but I think I will build a 4K HTPC. I got a sucky system which I got for temporary purpose after my older computer was destroyed in the floods in December 2015 (was supposed to be for only a couple of months but ended up using it for a year). I will get a totally new latest computer by the end of this year, will re-purpose the current system into a HTPC.

Thank you everyone for your advice.

I am currently posting this from my computer with the new card.

Finally back to Geforce after 12 years!

4K will be completely unusable on that system for anything other than Netflix or the like. Bummer they didn't have a 470, but at least you got an upgrade over your old card.
