I got a pair of Open Box 980TI Lightning LEs for my dad for $490 total from B&H, both OC to >1540 with ease, 1440 w/o touching the voltage. I doubt you can find more raw horsepower for the price (given you have a decent PSU).

Thanks guys. I decided to go for a 1070 in the end. Hopefully that's the correct choice, guess only time will tell.

Not sure but from what I have seen from digital foundry benchmarks of the 6700k it delivers much higher frame rates and better minimums even against the 4790k which is better than the 4670k. I increase the ram from 8 to 16 which fixed the sudden low fps dips but still I don't think I was getting anywhere near what a 6700k would have gotten with same card. To put it simple where the cpu is more of the bottleneck the 6700k will have a much better frame rate with any card. Keep in mind the games where the gpu is taxed more I see no discernible difference eg doom. I'm in a dilemma though cause I want to get the 6700k but not sure if Kaby lake would be better to wait for[/QUOTE]
Russian sensation has posted numerous times of the cpu bottleneck that happens when you use 1080p and 1440p resolutions with highend. Should take a look it's up your alley of information

AMD themselves said they are targeting a Q1 launch for the desktop parts in TWO of their latest events, with wide availability in Q2. H1 is server parts which AMD specifically said.

No. AMD's latest presser with release dates actually updated Vega to 1H 2017, from Q1 2017. That is rather telling that they aren't very confident about a mainstream release for Vega before March, 2017. Otherwise, they would have stuck with Q1.

As for Vega now in Q2, who knows if that is going to be a major volume release or somewhat limited. I hope it's the former, and I'd sure much rather it have stayed a Q1 release.

Wow I can't believe how many people are suggesting a Fury right now.... 3GB is a travesty. 4GB is barely passable for a mid-high card, and its on 28nm in a 16nm world. The only circumstance I'd ever suggest a Fury is when its on sale for under $300 and you already have a FreeSync display.

With a 290: 1) get a second 290 for super cheap if you arent a day 1 gamer, quite a potent set up when CF works, 2) go to 1070, 3) Wait for GP102 and Vega.

I think those are the circumstances with which people are recommending it.

There really isn't anything to step up from a 290x but a 1070. I loved my 290 tri-x the last <3 years and was really hoping to give AMD some money for a 490, but they've left us high end AMD buyers twiddling our thumbs as major games are releasing this year that put a hurt on our older cards. Then only releasing new cards of similar performance.

I don't particularly like Nvidia anymore and their GPU strategy since kepler, or their release cadence, but I got a relatively good deal on a Strix OC 1070 for $630AUD ($730 normally) and gladly jumped on it. Back to enjoying solid fps till AMD bring back some competition. Game bundles anyone?

For 1440p the 1070 is the safest bet at the moment, and it won't break the bank either.

1070 or a 980Ti, 980Ti goes for $360 now, and overclocked it is still faster than overclocked 1070

Some games the overclocked 980Ti is still faster, and when the 1070 is faster, it is like 1-5%

Considering the price difference between good AIB 980Ti ($360) and good AIB 1070 ($429) around $70-$80

The 980Ti is pretty good deal IMO, especially if you get a used one around $300-$350

Sure it consumes more power, but anyone with 650W+ PSU shouldn't real be deal breaker.

Reference 1070 is 14% faster than reference 980Ti at 1440p as per latest TPU chart.

Max OC AIB 980Ti is 35% faster than reference.
Max OC AIB 1070 is 20% faster than reference.

So that actually makes both cards equal however 1070 has more VRAM and newer architecture. At same price it's a no brainer.

You can't use refurbished or used products as an argument as for every new product there is a cheaper second hand product you can buy. The cheapest new 980Ti on Newegg is $590.
