Hello guys, I need some advice
I'm thinking of upgrading my dell latitude d600 processor of banias 1.4 to dothan 2.0. The price is $310 at newegg. Is it worth the upgrade? Will the performance increase be worth it? Or should I just sell and buy another notebook with a turion or a yonah core. Though the yonah core won't still be a 64 bit like amd. But buying a new notebook would cost 3x more than upgrading the processor. The notebook has a 512mb ram already, and a 40gb HD.

Is it also possible to overclock notebook processors?

Thanks alot guys.

Well, to start, are you really doing anything with your laptop that requires a lot of CPU power?

Will Dothan processor run on Banias chipset? If yes..go for it! I also recommend buying another 512Mb stick from Newegg..will give your D600 a nice boost. Don't recomend O/Cing anything as D600 Latitude is business series notebook and extra heat will always keep your fan running.

I don't know if it requires a lot of cpu power but I do some web design and coding and use office applications like word, excel, outlook

I was just thinking about buying a dothan core because sooner or later it won't be sold anymore because current notebooks are using sonoma cores and within months yonah cores would be replacing sonoma cores.

Just thinking if it's worth upgrading and would there be a noticable speed increase to lengthen the life of my notebook. And yes the dothan 400mhz is compatible with the banias socket

sweet! Time to upgrade my IBM X31.. Goin to replace 1.4Ghz Banias w/ 1.6 or 1.8Ghz Dothan. Anybody knows how much power Dothan take compared to Banias? I hope my battery life doesn't go down cus of this upgrade.

Reviews says that the dothan cores has lower power consumptions and better performance when compared to the same ghz.

You gonna upgrade? run a benchmark before and after then post em here

Yep, Intel's Mobile platform keeps getting better and better...Same for Yonah..it outperforms Dothan both in Battery life as well as Performance

Downloading Sis Sandra right now.

cheers

Honestly, I wouldn't bother upgrading if all you're doing is basic web and office stuff. Chances are you won't see much improvement at all, because the processor will still be running at 600Mhz - the extra L2 cache makes a difference, but not nearly enough to warrant an upgrade.

Unless you are really wanting a brand new processor, I'd buy a pulled (or in some cases new) dothan on eBay. They give for a fraction of the retail costs.

Considering the Dothan gives better battery life AND about +20% performance increase at the same clock speed, its a win-win situation. The only thing that you should be worried about is it worth the money cost.

That laptop is currently selling on ebay for about $550. I don't think it's worth spending another $300+ just to upgrade the processor when you're not going to see any noticeable improvement. Sure the processor is 25% faster, but you're not increasing the the speed of the memory/graphics/hard drive etc. And since most of what you do isn't that intensive, the laptop will probably feel about the same speed.

Probably better to save the money, and use the laptop until you really have a need for more speed. By that time dual core will be affordable and the laptops will probably come with HD-DVD / Blu-ray drives.
