upgrading gateway profile 1.8 computer

it has a socket 370 celeron 500mhz right now, takes 66/100 mhz socket 370 ppga & coppermine p3's. What is the highest that I can go up on this? Thanks!

1Ghz coppermines were the fastest 100fsb stk 370 chips released that will work w/ that board, since your limited to 100mhz FSB good luck find chips that will work. you make be better off seeing if you can use a Powerleap adaptor to get support for Tulan CPU's and put a faster P3 in there.

Tualatin celerons with an adapter are probably 'as fast as you can go', but they still aren't 'fast' (similar to coppermine P3s). Your celeron is probably the older model and won't do 750mhz, but that's worth a try, and after that you have to ask yourself what a ~1ghz PC is worth to you in excess of what you have - it will still run XP, play some (but not all) videos, and surf the net, but neither system is going to be fast.

Either way, your main obstacle to upgrading will be finding parts, rather than cost; I've pulled (and used) faster chips than that from PCs sitting out on garbage day!

true, I don't want to mess with an adapter anyway so I guess I'll try 750mhz. When you say older model, what do you mean? ppga vs ppga2? in that case, I was wondering what the fastest ppga was so I'll be able to put a listing in FS/FT

It is my mother's computer so as long as it runs win2k a bit faster, that's fine by me.
