Upgrading hard drive in a DELL 700m

Has any DELL 700m laptop owner tried to upgrade his hard disk drive? I am upgrading to a Hitachi 7K100 80GB 7200 rpm disk drive.

I just wanted to know if there could be any power problems. The current hard drive is a Toshiba 4200 rpm 40 GB disk and is about to fail soon.

There shouldn't be any power problems. 7200RPM drives insignificantly decrease battery power and don't produce that much more heat than a 4200/5400RPM drive.

Just make sure you remove the IDE pin adapter from the old hard drive and attach it to the new one when you go to install it. (Or that's how I always remember Dell IDE HDDs to be).

I had upgraded my old 700m to a 60GB 7200 rpm ide drive without any issues. Just be gentle wiggling the adapter off the drive. I recall there maybe was one screw you needed to unscrew and then the drive sort of swung upward where you could more easily remove it from the connector.

I just upgraded my 700M today. You need to take out the battery to get the hd cover off. It swings up a little and then you push it back. It has odd L shaped brackets on the opposite side of the screws.

Once you get it off there is a blue plastic piece that sort of holds the drive in place. Unscrew that before you take out the drive. Then you can swing the drive up and then out. Once you do that you'll have to pull the adapter off gently.

I upgraded to a 120gb samsung (5400 rpm) with no problems.
