A buddy of mine is having issues with installing a new hdd in his PS3. He said he formatted it to FAT32 on his winXP machine and then put it in the PS3. He said the PS3 won't recognize the drive. Any particular steps he gotta take to get it to work?

for some reason my win7 wouldn't let me format in FAT32, would only let me format in FAT.

i ended up using some linux boot disc to boot to linux and use a tool that was with the boot disc to format to FAT32 and that worked out for me.

not sure if that is the issue your friend is having however. my drive was only 500gb too.

I think you need to put the disk into an external first and format it with the PS3, but I could be wrong, I never replaced the drive on one.

if the disc isn't formatted in FAT32 prior to putting it into the PS3, the PS3 won't recognize it in order to perform it's "formatting" option thing.

he said he formatted it in FAT32 in windows xp then installed it internally. I told him to connect it again via usb directly to the ps3 and see if it shows up. I'll post something if it still doesn't work

Huh?
When I upgraded mine, I just popped in the unformatted bare drive.

The only thing you need formatted FAT32 before-hand is a USB HDD, if you want to use one to back up your existing system (and then restore from that after the HDD upgrade).

I remember reading somewhere a while back that 1TB HDDs were too large physically (height) by a mm or so to fit inside a PS3. Was that article bs or did something change recently? I couldn't find the specific article I read, but these are similar.

There may be standard-height 1TB drives now, but I believe it's also possible to use the taller one in a PS3 slim if you don't use the drive tray.

on my PS3 I had to have it formatted to FAT32 ... not sure if it is a launch PS3 thing or not, cause I was formatting a launch PS3.

yeah im pretty sure his is a launch fat ps3

according to the gamespot guide, Windows can only format up to 32GB FAT32, so that is probably why I couldn't find the option to format to FAT32 on Win7 with my 500gb drive.

HOWEVER ... it did have an option to format it FAT ... without the 32 on the end. maybe your friend thought that FAT and FAT32 were the same?

Same. I replaced my launch 60gig with 500 gig recently. You only need to do fat32 for external drives. PS3 will take care of internal hd.
