Alright.....

My current hard drive is a 4 gig SCSI and I need to copy the drive on a 28 gig EIDE hard drive since ive got a desktop. Insted of the Pentium II server I was using to get online.....

I can't find a way to just copy c: to d: and using windows backup won't help unless I can put the backup on my external HD and if the windows cd will find it when I launch ASR. When you pop in the disc and it finds your hardware...Will it find it?

Any ideas?!? I would like to get it working without having to reinstall SP2 and everything!

I'm on campus right now so ill check before i leave. Thanks!

I don't really know about the copying it from one to the next, but whats so bad about reinstalling XP? Slow system, or what? To me a reinstall is always good. It makes the computer run like new again. You could install on the 28gb, then copy the files over manually from inside the OS if need be.

I'm going from a P2 to a AMD K6-2 450mhz...So its a tad slow than what I like it to be but then again im using it for the net and my mom uses it more than me since im building a pc for video editing......Anyways.......I do a clean install how can I transfer SP2 and all the patches I downloaded to the new/slighty better PC? lol! because im also on dial-up.

Ya see where im coming from? I am trying to make this easy and not so pain staking.

Ah so you're on dial up. Gotcha.

Know anyone with broadband? Might just do the install, take it to someone's house and run all the updates.

Or, let it download over night. I think windows update will now let you resume broken updates -- not positive on that.

But switching CPUs and boards would mean you'd have to reinstall anyway. The current HD is set up for one, and would not recognize the other. So my advice is to clean install on new HD, copy data later, and find someone with broadband.

SON OF A...............

I spent all my three day weekend trying to prevent this! Not all weekend but it takes time to do this crap and I had to reinstall and then constant swap hard drives and reinstall cause the backup caused a crash....ugh fug! I wish I had the right tools and a faster PC!

That and trying to figure out why it wouldn't find my hard drive only to find out my EIDE cable went bad....

Can't I clean install Xp and use the file and transfering wizard to transfer all the friggin updates?!?

I was able to clone a raid-0 array to a single SATA drive using Acronis True Image 8. Might have luck with that, but it's gonna take some effort. You'll want to uninstall the IDE/SCSI controllers from device manager on the old PCI, then restart and boot with a true image CD, then make an image of the drive, probably putting the hard drive you are gonna use in the new machine in and put the image there. Then put the drive back in the new machine, boot with true image, and restore the image to that drive. You might also have to do a repair install afterwards, but if everything goes right, you'll have all your programs and such, and won't have to re-install anything..

but it might just be easier to do a fresh install, and re-install everything..

Alright after I install xp and sp2. Is there a way to transfer the downloaded xp updates to one pc to another or burn em on a disc?

Hi, Any two working drives can be Cloned. A regular copy wont work. All Drive manufacturers have downloads to do the job. Maxtor calls theirs MAXBLAST. It will partition and format in a few seconds, but does not test the entire drive so you should next run ScanDisk on it. It also has other features and one is Copy a partition which actually means CLONE ONE DRIVE to another. Luck, JIm
