upgrading laptop cpu need help

Hey guys I got a deal on a laptop and reason being the cpu is far from the best lol. The model of the laptop is
CQ60-615DX it's a compaq with 2gb ram, 250gb hdd, 15.6 inch screen, but a single core celeron cpu. I don't know shit about laptop upgrading, this is my first laptop. I was wondering if there is a dual core cpu that I can buy and just drop in that will work. I figure it shouldn't be too expensive.

cpu z shows it's a 45nm socket p 478 single core 2.2ghz celeron cpu. I'm hoping I can get a decent dual core cpu to slap in here. If not then oh well it's not a total loss, I mainly email, forums, and burn cds with it, a dual core cpu would be nice to have tho.

It would be easier for us to tell you which would work that way instead of having to trace down your planer board though your laptop model number.

honestly it works fine but the added speed of a dual core would be nice, if I can get a cpu for a decent price i'll buy one but if not then oh well, i'll save my money and just use it lol..

That is a socket PGA478 which is basically a socket P.

You want a dualcore?

also what cpu from that list is the best bang for the buck? They start off at $219 at newegg. Its a little more then I expected but they are new and I can probably get a used one off ebay for a fair bit cheaper.

I did what you are trying to do on my son's old laptop.

The first thing you should do, before you replace the existing CPU, is to update to the latest BIOS.

Then read the BIOS revision history for your laptop and see what processor support has been added along the way, that will narrow down your search somewhat.

Then check for what processors were offered for your model family of laptop. Only pay attention to laptops that have the same motherboard as yours does.

Then after that, you need to do a "bang per buck" calculation (MHz per dollar would be a start) on your available processors and see which ones come out on top. Then find a nice used exmple on E-Bay or wherever else you can get them cheap.

It's kind of a pain in the butt, but it can be done. Hopefully you have some prior experience in taking apart and successfully putting laptops back together. A FRU (field replacement unit) guide for your exact laptop is invaluable.

Thanks for all the help guys. I figure it will be around xmas when i upgrade this laptop but I'm gonna get 4gb of ram, and a faster cpu at the same time. I will have my buddy at my old job do the cpu and ram swap as he fixes laptops all the time at work since ppl drop them all the time.

the fastest and most noticable upgrade on a laptop is an SSD.

Because the laptop Hard drive is very very slow.

It's got a 7,200 rpm hdd in it not a 5,400. That was another reason why I bought it.
The price of a reasonable sized ssd is crazy, I don't even know what size ssd would be good for a laptop tho.

I think a dual core and 4gb of ram would be a better upgrade at first right? If not please let me know. I'll look into a ssd tonight

Yes, of course a dual core and 4gb would be much better, but it depends also of how muck your laptop can take it; you can see all those in BIOS and also you can ask to a specialized shop.

First thing I'm doing is buying a SSD and see how that boosts performance, I think I will be fine with 2gb of ram, I have done it before with vista and win 7 on a desktop. I ran games on the desktop too, the only game i played that taxed the ram was crysis but I'm not doing any gaming on here so ram should be fine. Heck after I get a SSD in there I may get a good enough increase where it will hold me over without any other upgrades.

I just simply couldn't afford a better laptop, I'm very glad I'm not doing anything very cpu intensive lol. I always buy something new and get the upgrade bug asap, I'm trying to fight it but I know I'm gonna lose to the almighty SSD.
