Upgrading Macbook harddrive

My bro has a macbook with a 60gb harddrive, but it is at capacity. What kind of hard drive would I need to buy to upgrade it? Does it have to be mac capable or any notebook hard drive?

It can be any SATA 2.5" drive, I think it has to be 9.55mm, not the 12mm variety.

There are some sites out there with installation instructions, it's not the easiest upgrade but it cane be done easily enough.

It is dirt simple really. Get any old SATA notebook drive off of NewEgg. Pull the battery, and within there you will see instructions for replacing the RAM and HDD. Remove the 3 screws, and hte metal plate that they hold in place. The battery is located on the left of the laptop (when it is upside down) and has a little white plastic pulltab. Pull that to remove the hard drive, and unscrew the old one from the sled. Put the new one into its place, and then you will have to reformat.

Well that's great to know, I thought I'd have to buy a mac specific hard drive. So something like this would work then?

I dont think the heat from a 7200RPM drive would be that bad, from what I have read, they have gotten a lot better when it comes to heat generation and power consumption

And that drive should work fine. If it is within his budget though, i would recommend he get the 160GB drive. I tell laptop buyers to try and guess what size drive they will need, and then get the next largest one. I figured I would need an 80, so i got the 100. I am now wanting more space, but it has been a little over a year.

Just make sure the hdd is a 9.5mm one. Otherwise it won't fit.

I put in a 7200. No heat issues whatsoever. No less battery life either.

good to hear a 7200 doesn't seem to have any downsides (other than having to buy it.. heh). Now only if i could upgrade the video card...
