Upgrading motherboard with XP

I've got Windows Xp and I'm a little worried about upgrading my motherboard and processor with it. I've heard about XP thinking it's been installed on another PC and not working? What happens if you upgarde the mobo and processor? Does it still work as before? And should i put the cards I had in it previously again for the 1st new boot or just the graphics card? Could someone just quickly tell me what happens. Thanks.

This is right up my alley.

I've glanced at the referenced thread, and I'm cautiously skeptical. I don't know where Modus got that information and I see the potential for more harm than good.

The reality of the situation is that if the new motherboard uses the same HAL and the same disk controller driver, the swap should be fine.

If the two motherboards need different HALs (ACPI vs non-ACPI for instance), go with a fresh install.

If the two motherboards need different hard drive controller drivers, install the driver for the new mobo before swapping the motherboard and ensure it is set to boot start.

You should be golden. Really.

If you want an extra layer of warm fuzzies, run sysprep before doing the swap. If you'll read the docs on sysprep (on the XP CD), you'll see that what you're doing is essentially the same thing that sysprep is designed for.

The HAL is the showstopper in this equation.
