I was looking toward the 8.1 but reading some reviews, i may go with win7

Some people gotta have the latest thing and/or don't mind Win 8.1 or they actually like it.

I'd go with Win 7 myself although I have alot of 'puters using XP.

I know that you recommended the crucial m500 240gb. What are your thoughts on the samsung 840 evo?
Other than samsung having 10 more gb?

The DX38BT is an LGA775 board, which means the CPU will be at best a Core 2 Quad. Certainly not worth reusing. I wouldn't reused the old DDR3 either, the DIMMs are small and likely 1.65V.

Reusing the case does save you $84 off the build. What about drives? It could have something reasonably big in there.

As for your previous question about GPUs, you need to spend at least $300 to get to something that can handle 1440p reasonably. That means a GTX 770 or R9 280X. Really though, you want a $500 card like the GTX 780 to be able to play all games at high detail and 1440p.

It's faster but you won't notice it. Either drive does the job fine, grab whichever is cheaper per GB

That's what i was going to do. Just curious.

What is the difference between the samsung 840 pro vs 840 evo?
I've read that the pro is faster but uses a different nand mlc but it's older and fster, the evo uses 19nm tlc. slower but cheaper to produce?

You can get a USB3.0 PCIe card for cheap ($10), although they do have ODD-sized busses too, if you want to go there.

Yes, the Samsung monitor I listed is probably going on 2 years, but it's a very nice monitor; at 27" for $180, I'm trying to find justification to get one myself. I think that's what I paid for my 20" when I bought it.

That's pretty much it. The real world difference between the two is negligible, certainly not worth the 50% premium.

I know that u mentioned the sapphire r9. But what about other name brands that are similar in specs? Is one company better than the others? Like better cs, longer warranty etc?

http://www.amazon.com/AMD-Radeon-Vis...ords=radeon+r9

http://www.amazon.com/MSI-R9-270X-Di...ords=radeon+r9

The GTX 660 is pretty much slower than an R9 270X, though I wouldn't go over 1080p with either. That Samsung that Charlie linked is indeed a pretty good deal if you want something bigger that keeps a relatively easy to drive resolution.

As for the case, I think the Phantom is an overall nicer case, but there is certainly nothing wrong with the Eleven Hundred, certainly not for $50 AR. The fan speed is adjustable, so I don't think you'll have a problem with noise.

As for all in one CLCs, they are not necessarily quieter than a big HSF, they still have to have 120mm fans to push air over the radiators. Either case will take a single 120MM CLC, but I don't think the Eleven Hundred can handle a 240mm setup (two 120mm fans side by side). The Phantom 410 has provisions for that though.

While Linux is free, has a lot of cool software or at least some type of alternative to a Windows equivalent, there's still the issue of not all hardware having drivers for it, also gaming is virtually non-existent as many of the most popular games utilize DirectX which is something only accessible on Windows based operating systems. Many indie publishers and developers are trying to transition away from it, and many fun games can run on Linux, but the big name titles all require DirectX so you're SOL if you want to play the popular stuff on a Linux box.

Sapphire, MSI, XFX, Gigabyte, and ASUS are all pretty comparable in my eyes. Amazon's pricing and stock levels on R9 270X's are pretty bad, but if you have to buy from them, I would get this XFX R9 270X for $220 (in stock as of me writing this).

I would like a 1440 monitor, but it is way over my price range.

Although this is 1080p, it looks good. A bit pricey.

Not to sure on asus brand monitors though. I know they have computer components that are good.

We're you looking for a 1440 monitor? The one you linked is a 1080

I wouldn't recommend 27" 1080p, it's much more expensive than 23-24" and not quite as optimal in terms of pixels per inch. I've had both 23" 1080p and 27" 1080p, and 27" works but 23" works better.

Asus monitors are pretty good, I'd say above average. But if you're willing to pay as much as $300, I'd recommend Dell U2412M $279 @amazon. Excellent image quality thanks to a high quality IPS panel, height adjustable stand, 1920x1200 resolution

My cousin has one of those 27 inch monitors and although its big I don't really like it myself.

For a gaming desktop computer, I think a quality 24 inch monitor is worth its weight in gold.

I was really looking into getting a bigger monitor than 24".

What is the optimal pixel per inch for a 27" monitor?

Earlier this month there was a few vid cards radeon r9 270x for around $200. Now it's hard to find those type of vid cards for that price.
So far i can only find ones that are $230+ (on amazon).

Maybe there is a shortage or something. Or just missed my opportunity.

For 27", 1440p is the best. QNIX QX2710 $385 or a step up from that, Dell U2713HM $585. But to reach the same framerates on 1440p as on 1080p using the same image quality settings, you need a graphics card with 80% more performance. An overclocked 290X is to 1440p what a stock 270X is to 1080p.

The shortage is caused by spike in bitcoin prices and miners are buying the cards. Maybe it will come down later or you could go Nvidia instead.

Agree on both counts. A GTX 780 or R9 290 w/ custom cooler is what I'd recommend for gaming on a 1440p display. Given the run on AMD cards due to cryptocoin mining, I'd recommend going with the Nvidia option.

A GTX 770 or R9 280X will work for games that are out today, but will need to run at reduced settings.
