upgrading notebook graphics...

Hey all, i have a Toshiba Satiellte s1715-143 ( i believe) and i love it to death. The problem is, it has a Geforce 4 420go with a paltry 16 MB Video RAM (dedicated). Anyway i can upgrade this???

You can only upgrade if it is based on a modular video card design. And Toshiba needs to be supplying the upgrade options. That is the only way. Module video cards don't have one uniform interface design like desktop graphic cards (AGP or PCI). The interface design is left up to system vendors.

You'd have to check with Toshiba, it MIGHT be possible, but it will involve considerable dissassembly of your notebook and effort on your part. If Toshiba uses the same interface design for more powerful graphics chips, then it most likely can be done. You just void your warranty by doing so . . . unless Toshiba replaces it, or you take it to a Toshiba certified techinician?

Find out what model laptop you have. The 1715XCDS has an integrated 4MB ATI mobility video chip. The only models that I can think of off the top of my head that have modular VGA boards and use the GeForce chip are the 3000 series (GeForce2Go, 16MB) the 5105 series (G4-440Go, 32/64MB), and the 6100 series (G4-420Go, 16MB). The M10/15 series have a modular card as well, but it comes with the system board and I can't remember which NVidia chip it uses or the amount of memory (and I am too tired to look it up right now).
