Upgrading PS3 hard drive

It is my understanding that I can use any SATA 7200 RPM drive? No limit on size? Does the PS3 do a format on its own then?

My main question was backing up. Any guide I read online says to use the built in backup and restore feature on the PS3. Well, I notice that the rockband saves are locked, meaning you cannot back them up for some stupid reason.

Would it be possible to connect both drives in a PC and copy the saves from drive to drive, or is it a file system that windows won't recognize.

I wouldn't use a 7200rpm drive, it would get pretty hot. It also has to be a laptop (2.5") drive.

Why not go all out and nabb a 500 gig HD? Mine as well. If I had a PS3 thats what I would do. Unless they have finally put out a 1 TB Laptop HD. They can usually be had close to 100$ for 500 gigs which is a nice size for a PS3.

i 2nd that
i read somewhere that the speed is negligble between 72 and 54. mainly because your not accessing many files but one or 2. i guess if you were transfering alot of stuff on and off of the drive that would be somethingto consider.

id probaly go with the 500gb 5400 with 16mb cache. more capacity for more stuff.

I'm not sure why I'll ever need more than the 60 gigs I have. I rarely play more than 1 or 2 games at a time, so even if they require installs, I'll never hit 60 gigs.

I'm using half of my 40. I have 4 downloaded games, more Rock Band songs than I care to admit I paid for, movie trailers, and now Blu-Ray Live titles are downloading hundres of MB down to my drive.

Anyone care to answer my original questions about copying the old drive to the new with a PC so I can get my rockband saves?

I have 150GB of 200GB used on my drive. I dont delete demos, Mandatory installs from a lot of games, 12GB of MP3, etc. It adds up after awhile.

Ok, I finally found a thread over on the rockband forums that kinda answers my question. Apparently the RB game data WILL export, but can only be re-imported onto the exact same console, which will be fine for the HD upgrade.

sswingle, you're correct, but there's a bit more to it: you can't actually transfer your RB save data (~ 6 MB) by itself, because it's locked. The only way to do it is to perform a complete system backup onto a USB hard drive, then do a system restore with it on the exact same console, that now has your larger hard drive in it.

Personally, I think the backup/export feature on the PS3 is really easy to use.

It's complicated, because I dont WANT to do an entire backup. I don't have a USB device big enough thats FAT32. So I need to manually delete all the stuff I can just redownload, just so I can do a system backup to get the stupid rock band savegame, that any other freaking savegame on the console I can just manually get a copy of that individual savegame, but not for the rockband savegame. (and apparently NFS Carbon, but I dont care about that one)

So yes, it is needlessly complicated.

So, you guys think a 7200RPM would be a bad thing? I can't think it would add that much heat unless you had the PS3 in an already cramped space.

I put a 250gb Seagate 7200rpm HDD in my 60gb PS3, works perfectly for me. I think someone on the playstation forums did a test of heat and performance difference from stock and it was minimal on both. I'd go whatever is cheaper for the GB on 5400 or 7200 drives.

Laptop 7200rpm sata ones don't really get any hotter than the 5400rpm ones. Its just that are you willing to pay 20-40$ for a few less seconds of load time.
