Well basically I took my old hp machine, stuck it in my coolermaster case until i get my new pc, along with a few upgrades. Here are the specs:
p4 2.26ghz 533fsb
some MSI/HP ATX motherboard
512mb infineon ram
Pc power and cooling 510 deluxe
Sony dru500a burner
Cendyne 52x16x52x burner
Geforce MX 420 which I'm trying to replace with AIW 9700 pro
Coolermaster atc-101b
Coolermaster heatsink
I'm having a problem thats annoying as HELL. basically, I uninstalled the nvidia drivers, did the drivercleaner bit, powered down the machine, popped the radeon in, rebooted, downloaded the 4.9's, installed them, and rebooted. At the reboot, I go to log in, and it sits on "loading settings" for about 10min, then goes to my background, at which point I see some "Norton reparing d" message. Then the machine gets to my desktop, but doesn't load anything besides the icons, and won't load. No system tray or anything. So i hard turn it off and reboot. This time, it logs me on, then logs me off after about 10 seconds. what the hell?
I try safe mode. It just hangs. So i try "system director safe mode" or something weird like that and I successfully load safe mode in windows. So I uninstall the drivers, do drivercleaner again, download the cat 4.7's which I have had good experiences with with my old radeon 9700. I reboot, and lo and behold, I can log into windows fine. Everything seems to work; 3d apps, the ati control panel, everything. SO I go to install far cry, and on the second disk, my cd rom drive spins like crazy and errors out of the installation (brand new cd might i add, I just opened it). So I reboot, and I'm back to the SAME DAMN PROBLEM. It either logs me on and then off, gives me an "insufficient resources, you will be logged on with a default profile" error message, "incorrect paramater setting" or just hangs on loading settings. If I put in the nvidia card everythings good.
The HP motherboard has an agp 4x slot, its manufactured by msi. Its not that generic. The memory is name brand, the psu is the best on the planet, no grounding on the case, nothing is wrong. All i want to do is game a little; I haven't gamed in about 4 months due to no system. Right now I think its either a driver or windows XP problem.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated
