How hard is it to upgrade the ram in the alum mbp? I can easily build a desktop,and have replaced ram in windows laptops, but the MBP is a little more difficult since i need to unscrew the bottom cover.

1.Where can i buy the appropriate size screw driver or one of those sets of small screwdrivers? walmart?

2.Can someone please link me to the appropriate Ram I'll be needing in a 2x2gb set. Not sure which speed i need.

3. Is there a guide out their that i can reference for any problems i might encounter.

Thanks for the help

I put my own SSD in my 13" MBP two days after I bought it. (Only two weeks ago. )

It's incredibly easy. Just remove the screws from the bottom of the laptop and lift the bottom plate. I remember seeing the DIMM slots readily available. The hardest part is making sure you keep track of what screw came out of what hole.

I haven't found a reason to upgrade from 4GB yet, but I might if I find a good deal on 8GB RAM somewhere.

EDIT: You can get a screwdriver set from Radio Shack easily for cheap. It's just normal phillips screws. Be careful not to strip them.

EDIT2: I thought all MBP came with 4GB? I have the latest unibody aluminum 13" MBP. Exactly what model do you have?

Upgrading memory in unibody MBP is stupid easy. Precision screwdriver sets can be purchased at any Walmart, Home Depot, etc..

everymac has a picture of every mac and how to do every upgrade.

2007 C2D go to 4gb, iirc 2008+ units do 2+4gb (6gb) and 2009+ do 8gb as the upgrade max. might want to think about that.

only the very very first white macbooks were limited to 2gb max

If you need to figure out what ram to get, just go to crucial.com and use their memory tool.

Also, there are only 2 slots in there, so you will have to do a 2*2GB or 2*4GB kit.

Yea, how you had written it before it it looked like you were asking if 2+2+1 would work.

I don't see why 5GB wouldn't work, but you lose dual channel, and I don't think that you will see much benefit from an extra GB. Just get 2*2GB, you should be set.

install ram in matching pairs:
2GBx2=4Gb
4GBx2=8GB
DDR 3, 1066mhz or 1333mhz, doesn't matter it will make it run at 1066mhz.

also you can get the screwdriver anywhere, dollar store, home depot, etc.
It's very easy, I opened my 2010 MBP yesterday to install a new hard drive (Hitachi 7k500), I just used a precision screwdriver set I bought from the dollar store.

i did a memory and hard drive swap on my mid 2009 MBP. No guided really needed.

Turn MBP upside down.
Remove Screws
Pull Off Lid
Remove the 2 memory sticks
Enter new Ram at 45degree angle and push down.
Boot up MBP
Check if 4 or 8 gigs read properly
If good, shut down and put bottom plate back on.
If bad, shut down and re-seat ram.

Get one of those utility screw drivers designed by eyeglasses. You can find them in the impulse buy checkout line section for $0.99 at many places.

virtually all mac users always talk about how there is enough ram already? Why would you use a mac when you clearly didn't get enough ram? Windows is much better.

I am confused. You get all up in Nothinman's business for thread crapping and then... you do it yourself. Hypocrite.
