Ok, so I'm completely upgrading my entire computer. Custom building my own case, and then pretty much upgrading every piece of hardware (minus dvd burner and harddrives).

I've been reading a lot of CPU reviews lately, and I'm on the face about what to do. There's the Pentium D 805 overclocked to 4ghz with watercooling that I thought about. Then I was checking into AMD, then the newer Pentium Ds. I just can't decide.

Would it just be best to wait for the Conroe to come out? I'm trying to do this without spending a ton of money, but, I don't wanna get a new CPU, to have it be one of the worst on the market within a year. And if I do go Conroe, I'll have to buy one that supports the 1066mhz FSB, correct?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

And in regards to my avatar, I am not an old black man. Not that there'd be any problem with that.

Heh, welcome to the forums, we don't make judgements about you according to your avatar

You could provide a bit more info though on your current system. But from the sounds of it, it's pretty old. What are you planning on using the computer for? Gaming vs. encoding makes a big difference in what most of your money should goto.

And budget... Wait till July 24th if you want dual-core-AMD will be cheap, and a POSSIBILTY Conroe will be available by then. Single-core, AMD is cheap right now. 805 on water is a waste. For total less $, an X2 3800 is faster. Newer D's are better, but no faster.

It's oldish, but not super old. P4 3.2 ghz HT, Socket 478. 1gb of Geil PC 3200 RAM. 2 200gb Maxtor SATA drives, Lite-On DVD burner, Geforce 4 ti-4200. My videocard is about the oldest thing in my current computer. It's a few years old, and it's been cutting it for a while, but I think the time has come to get a new videocard, and, unfortunately, AGP cards are now scarce, and since everything is going PCI express, and none of my current hardware (minus DVD burner and harddrives) would fit a board with PCI express. So, time to upgrade I guess.

I use my computer for gaming, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash, some 3d modeling, etc, etc.

Getting a socket 939 X2 on the 24th of July will let you reuse the ram, which saves you anywhere from 70-100 bucks. You could get a motherboard and CPU for around $250 bucks if you go for a cheap motherboard (not necessarily bad, cheap with regards to price) and that'd be all you need (and the video card, of course). Going Conroe/AM2 will require you to buy new RAM, too.

not true, this board here supports Conroe and allows you to use ddr1 ram. It also has a pci-e slot too and an agp slot too so you can reuse your old video card if you want.

this one also supports ddr1 ram, but doesn't have an agp slot, just pci-e

OK...you go ahead and buy ASSrocks....I know quite a few who have bought them and have not been pleased...

i think I will stick to one of the big guys.... Asus, DFI, or MSI.....

to OP:

Wait for the Conroe...Most cad apps use 2 cores efficiently but 4 cores not as well (as seen in my dual dual core 270 review)...I bet a Conroe oc'd to 3ghz would outperform even 4 cores of my 270...Mainly cause my CAD app shows little gain above 2 cores unless you use Radiosity....
