Upgrading system and have a question...

I am changing out the processor/mobo and already have my two 60 gig drives in raid 0 and am wondering if I can just plug and play them in my new rig. The new mobo is the Asus deluxe and I am sticking in a High Point 404 PCI raid controller card also. Plus I have a WD 120 Gig HD I will be using also but as a backup of my digital video editing. Should I plug that into the mobo or into the raid card? I would imagine I would just plug it into mobo... I am new to building rigs so bear w/ me. All parts will be here tomorrow if tracking #'s are correct and it does not snow much more here tonite...

If the old RAID controller is the same type, then it should work, you may just need to go into the new RAID BIOS and tell it to recover the existing array setup. If the old controller is a different brand entirely, it won't work, you'll need to backup, build a new array, format, and restore. I'm not sure if the Highpoint 404 chip is completely compatible with the older 37x series, so even though it might be the same brand it may not work. Going from a 371 to a 374 would work.

The 120GB should be plugged into the standard IDE ports. If you put it on a cable with the RAID drives, it will reduce performance since only one drive can be sending or receiving on a single cable at the same time.

Thanks for the quick reply. So I should plug my WD 120 gig into the my old system and back up my current system and then go from there?

That would be the most effective option. It's always good to reinstall Windows when you change motherboards anyway, although it's not totally required.
