Upgrading to WinXP Sp2 and unable to connect to the internet....

So I recently installed SP2 on my WinXP Home edition. After doing so I wasn't able to connect to the internet. My LAN connection would say "Limited or No Connection." After scouring the web, I was able to find the fix patch as well as instructions on a specific command to type in the DOS prompt to reset the winsock.

After doing this, my computer is able to obtain an IP address and my network status would show that it is connected. But IE/Mozilla/or any other internet program would still be unable to load any webpages or connect to the web. I've tried uninstalling the network card drivers, reinstalling it, renewing the IP, checking the TCIP connection settings and everything else I could think of. Nothing works.

Does anyone know what is going on here? Is there a step I'm missing to fix this problem with Sp2?

Do you have a firewall like Kerio, ZoneAlarm or Norton? If so disable it and try to access the web.

When you get an IP address does it also get DNS servers (use ipconfig to see them)? Try to ping the DNS servers and try using nslookup to test dns resolution.

Try to ping your router first to see if you can get replies... if you can, the try to ping a dns like google.com or something...

If you can ping your router, but cannot ping a dns, then the problem may lie in your modem or your ISP. I have heard a case where a dsl connection was active, but the isp would not allow access to outside DNS addresses.

I don't have any firewall installed and I also made sure WinXP's built in one was disabled too.

Yeah it's able to retrieve an IP address, DNS server, gateway and the whole shebang.

When I ping a site like google it wouldn't be able to ping at all.

I had this problem before also. Change your TCP/IP settings to a static IP that your router can reconise. It seems that SP2's DHCP does not work very well behind a router.

To get to the config of your DSL modem, you need to set a static IP. By doing this, I was able to connect to the Internet. Strage, but that worked for me.

Good suggestions and I understand where it's coming from. The problem is that I don't have a router and my DSL assigns an IP everytime. I can't set a static IP because I would have to do so everytime I reboot. And I can't ping my router because I don't have one

As sony says, it's not a bug, it's a feature! M$ finally found a way to make your PC totally secure and safe from internet viruses and hackers...no more internet connection! It's all so simple, I don't know why I didn't think of it.

Seriously though, could you provide more info about how you go about establishing a DSL connection if you don't have a router? That would be helpful.

verizon provides a dsl modem (the one without the built in router) and it connects directly to my computer.
