Uploaded .avi clips won't play

I have several .avi clips that I captured from home video. On my local machine, Windows Media Player plays them with no problem. But I've tried several times to upload them to my wife's website on tripo.lycos and they won't play from there. I get a successful upload message, but when I click the link, Media Player opens and says "Invalid file format".

Well I clicked on the link and it asked if I wanted to download your said file , I downloaded it and it plays fine in WMP 8.

Not sure if it was supposed to stream from your web sit instead of being a downloaded file ?

Thanks for you reply GAZZA. I'm running 98se and the latest version of WMP in can find is 7.1

What perplexes me is that the file runs just fine from my local machine, but after I upload it to the website it won't.

Is anyone out there running 7.1 able to view this file?

You probably need to convert the files to a streaming format (like an ".asf"). I believe the website has to have a process up (or at least you have to have the code) enabled for streaming.

I think Microsoft has a converter (for free? I don't know) somewhere on their site....maybe in the multimedia or DirectX pages.

Some of the editing programs have the necessary CODEC to create a streaming-format video file (like Adobe Premiere).

Check around, I'm sure you can find something for (leagally) little or no cost.

I had to pull it down. After I got the videos working I posted them to another BBS (Hotboat). The site they were streaming from only allows 3 gig of bandwidth per month (10 mb/day), and in 3 hours my vids ate up over 30mb.
