UPS night shift

I'm thinking about ringing up some extra cash during the summer months. I do have a day job, and I am entertaining an idea of a moonlighting job that would involve some manual labor to buff up a little.

I used to load and unload eighteenwheelers back in the days, so working with trucks is nothing new. I was thinking about UPS dawn shift (3:30 AM - 9 AM), but the hours are a bit too long for me. Ideally I would have preferred 4 AM - 8 AM, so that I could have a couple of hours of sleep before I switch to my dayjob.

Has anyone tried this? How much of a toll on yourself is it? Would I be completely exhausted by the end of the week?

Another thing is, the pay is not that great: $8.50 to $9.50/hour. I was thinking about checking out docks/ports - maybe get something there. I don't mind getting down and dirty.

They get paid like a buck more then the regular hour guys, & everyone ends up trying to sign up for that shift. It's never a certain thing that you can just walk in & get the job. They grab people they can mold & manipulate. When I was in school & tried out, there were probably 35 people looking for a job that particular meeting, & 25 wanted the extra dollar. Some of them were loser kids, others were overqualified. They hired a majority of the young kids, while never got back to almost anyone over 20. Some of us were past managers & drivers, just looking for a way in the door, & they saw through that.

I work nights at another company, make a bit more than $8.50/hour. Plus, my shift is 10pm to 7am, the hours are kinda a drag and it does beat you up, especially if it's all physical labor. But it's not that bad.

I work 11pm-7:30am at a hospital. Personally, I think you would be completely exhausted and be hating your life by the end of the week if you worked half an overnight shift and then a full time day job. I'm assuming you work 8 hours at your day job. Working 12 hour shifts isn't too bad if you only do it 2-3 days at a time and then have plenty of recovery time in between. Five straight days of 12 hour shifts with only 2 days to recover would blow. I wouldn't do it unless you really want/need that extra $180ish a week. I don't think $180 is worth feeling like crap all the time.

Yea the whole working 13 hours a day gets really old real quick. Luckily I have not had to do this (but I now have a professional job) but I know several people who do stuff like this, and they are always dead tired. Seriously if you need to make more money get an education or get some certs and get a better paying job.

I used to work at UPS as an unloader in 2nd shift, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. I am not sure that you can do a full time job and then 4 hours of HARD and FAST PACED manual labor work every day.

Trust me, it is hard work and hot like hell in those trailers, especially iin the summer. If you are in good shape and can do it, good luck.

UPS is very physically demanding, you never get to stop to even "catch your breath", so to speak. Go, go, go. Big boxes, little boxes, just keep 'em moving as fast as you can!
I've done construction in UPS hubs in Louisville, I decided that would not be something I would do!
