$13 for a California roll!?

I'm probably going to get:
Lobster Tempura with Ponzu or Creamy Spicy Sauce $48

glad I make ATOT $

edit:
Wagyu Beef $34 per oz
alternator size please
I went to that Nobu a number of years ago, when I was on a business trip. I convinced a non-adventurous eater to accompany us to fill a four-person table, with the promise that it is a good restaurant for star-gazing, as it was popular with the local entertainment types. In fact, I think Robert De Niro owns part of it. She was not disappointed, as Conan O'Brien was there with his entourage of pretty ladies. He really does have a giant head by the way. Kinda reminded me of a human bobblehead.

Anyhoo, the food was good, but not totally great awesome. So, given the money spent, I was somewhat disappointed. I was hoping that every dish was going to be awesome, some of them were just decent. I've had better food locally (Toronto) for less money. I suspect it's because Nobu is actually a chain, not actually run by Nobu himself in each restaurant (obviously).

Oh and I've had a $30 burger locally. It was good, but my $5 burgers on my BBQ are often much better (unless I screw it up).

Going to nakazawa next week. $150pp +tax/tip/drink

That doesn't seem so bad for Edomae sushi. Maybe I'll try for a reservation when I'm there this summer. Recently went to Yoshizumi for about that price.

Nah it's really not - $185-200 seemed to be the high end of the range so $150 for a guy with his pedigree...

High end sushi in Japan is also really expensive.
Yeah, but tabehodai sushi in Japan is often better than most "Japanese" restaurants in the US, unless you really like the deep-fried rice soaked in mayo and unagi sauce with your onion volcano hibachi steak.

I went to Nobu in hawaii last year and it was ridiculously overpriced for what I got. The food was decent, but definitely not the "best meal ever" for the price I paid.

and i'll make another controversial statement: Kobe beef sucks priced WAY too high. Here's a protip to anyone who ever gets to go to Japan: get any Wagyu beef that's not Kobe, for 1/4 of the price and it tastes exactly the same.

Best sushi we had was at Sushi Yasuda. $175/pp for Omaksae(amazing selection of freshly imported fish). No tip needed as they follow the Japanese custom.

The marbling is so freakish lol. Damn genetics...

It's not just genetics. The diet is key to real Kobe: I think it's high-grain content like barley or some shit, and they force-feed those cows a few liters of fancy beer every day. They are massaged daily to tenderize the muscle and they pipe in Beethoven or some shit.

They also get to watch thrilling 5 hour PvP RAID matches in WoW, to help increase the fatty.

I can't remember much liking Japanese cuisine. Sushi? Nah, teriyaki, it's fine, but it gets old. I like tempura, it's true, but it's been years.

I just returned from NYC last night.. Nakazawa was amazing. I don't know how this place doesn't have a star yet. Both my wife and I thought it was much much better than Yoshizumi. We both opted for the drink pairings and a few additional pieces bringing up the bill, but it was so worth it.

$13 for a California roll does not sound expensive at all. It also does not sound upscale.

Nakazawa is an awesome itamae. Did you try that Japanese Hefenwizen? My god, a $9/12oz beer (retail) has never tasted so good.

On the SoCal side, I want to try N/Naka (of Chef's Table fame), and Tempura Endo, a japanese import. $150++ tempura omakase O_O

In case you're wondering, that's a hokkaido scallop with a piece of black truffle in the middle, tempura fried, topped with caviar.

I have a similar spot prawn photo too!

I did not try the hefenwizen though now I wish I did. I felt pretty good after 6 sake pourings.. I'll just have to go back sometime.

That tempura looks awesome. Headed down to Socal early next year so I'll have to put it on the list!
