I have a couple friends I see a couple times a month and we go to http://bluefinbyabe.com/ for lunch a few times a year. Last time we went in there the hostess seated us and asked us if we wanted our usual drinks practically before we even sat down. Between the 3 of us it's not difficult to rack up a $350 check including drinks and tip. The sushi is really good and it's a nice place to go eat lunch after hiking or mtn biking in the hills above Crystal Cove.

I like my sushi from a Japanese market deli. Just give me two orders of the salmon/tuna on top of a California roll thing, maybe an order of karage, and I'm good. Now great ramen or dim sum is another story. You need to wait in line for the good stuff.

Japanese food found in America is typically isn't as authentic as they seem.

It's actually pretty hard to find some really authentic restaurants in America that isn't overly priced. Raleigh is a shithole for Japanese food, only one real authentic place.

Better to go to Japan and experience it there, make sure to hit up an izakaya.
