urgent question about heatsink installation

I've got a retail amd 1600+ and I'm installing the heatsink on the chip right now (the chip is already in the mobo)

I'm following the included directions from AMD lick for lick. I was practicing attaching the heatsink to the chip a few times like the manual advised. I pulled the heatsink off once and some pink stuff was stuck on the die. The manual said to remove tape, but I thought that pink stuff was the tape. Apparently my retail heatsink came with no tape on it! Is this bad? I proceeded to scrape the pink stuff off the die. Since just a little bit got stuck (like 2 mm little patch) can I scrape off a little corner of the pink stuff (that won't be touching the die anyways) and put it in the middle??? I am right in saying the pink stuff is the thermal stuff right??? Please help...

Yes, you removed the thermal interface material. I would not recommend doing the patch job as you have described. Instead go to the local Radio Shack and buy the white thermal heatsink grease.

Scrape all of the pink stuff off, and put some new thermal compound on the die. Attach the heatsink and you are done.

The pink stuff is the thermal compound. Once you have applied and removed the heatsink, you need to scrape off whats left and apply new compound. If you don't have any, Radio Shack or any computer store sells small tubes for about $5.

bummer, I live in a crappy city, and radio shack isn't open on sundays. I need to get this freaking thing built before monday.

what are my chances on the "scrape some off the edge" method??? Would it really hurt that much??

I'm not going to be overclocking or anything. I patched it up pretty evenly, and all of the die will be touching the pink crap. Fingerprints on the thermal stuff won't hurt it will it? I would wait, but that's really an option Unless, I'm almost positive it isn't going to work.

fingerprints (more specifically, the oil) interferes with heat transfer, but how much i dont know. if it were me, i'd wait. but that's just me. i dont like gambling with my computer parts

Okay, I found out rat shack it open on Sun, so I'll see if they have the stuff. You just open the tube and squirt it on the die, or on the heatsink? Does it need to be smoothed out or anything??
