two days ago i started up my computer and BAM. no audio. i open up the volume control and it says "There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel click Printers and other Hardware and the click Add Hardware". so i go into my device list thinking something was wrong with my drivers but there everything was recorded as fine. i reinstalled the realtek drivers off their website, reinstalled direct x but it is still not working. i made sure it wasnt disabled and i checked in my bios (though there was no option to disable/enable audio devices) i also tried the services.msc thing with making sure it runs automatic and also attempting to start it. and when i start it in services.msc an error pops up and says "could not start the Windows audio service on local computer error 0xc0000096" i am also using a plantronics gamecom pro1 headset (dsp chip) if that matters. plz help me troubleshoot this problem. thx in advanced.

Dont post with stupid crap like urgent or caps, its annoying. i think your onboard sound is dead. Just go spend $20 on a new card.

Touchy bunch around here. You may want to take a closer look in the BIOS it seems to me that there should be an option to disable onboard sound. I'm not familiar with that board or BIOS but that's pretty much a standard AFAIK, in case you want to use a card.

He said hes looked in the bios and reinstalled drivers. Sorry dude but i think your sound mightve died. Mine did somthing similar which led to me buying an audigy 2 ZS OEM for 25 pounds.

the only thing audio related in my bios that i see shows like this:

Audio: choice 1 (EDB) or choice 2 (PCI)

its set at edb. its default

and yeah there is a lot of forum trolls around because this is urgent to me since i have spent more than 40 hours researching a solution

If your time is worth $1/hour or more, it might be time to just cut your losses and just buy a new card.

If you do some gaming, something like a $35AR Audigy2 value would be a good bet for a budget gaming card.

Sounds like you tried a lot of stuff already so I'm not sure what else to suggest trying.

well considering the on-board sound sucks anyway, something cheap like a SB Live would be significant better than it.

Have you tried it set at PCI? Maybe it's screwed up & backwards in the BIOS. Maybe try disabling other things like USB or anything you're not using in case something's interfering somehow. Do you have any other headphones to try or a speaker(s)? Can you check out an on-line manual at the manufacturers site to confirm the jack layout to be sure you're plugging into the right one. Is there a utility that controlls the mixer etc? Make sure the volume is up other than windows taskbar.

Did you uninstall all the old drivers and install the latest ones for whatever card you got?
