There is no NAFTA deal without Canada regardless of what US-Mex agreed to between themselves (and a number of important issues appear to be outstanding from this "agreement"). Mexico doesn't look to be interested in making this bilateral as Trump is claiming if Canada can't come to terms. Trump wants to use the announcement to strong-arm Trudeau into agreeing...I'm unsure that works on the compressed timetable Mexico is looking for before AMLO assumes power.

Kind of a mess really.

Usual warning applies of always be wary when Trump proclaims deals.

Edit: Also if I understand the auto rule changes get ready to pay even more for cars on top of what the metals tariffs are going to do

The reason is because Canada literally stepped out of the negotiations and said the equivalent of "You guys settle what issues you have - and we will come back in when you're done". So yes - of course they were writing it under the presumption that Canada would agree as well.

The US was making escalating demands on Canada so the real conversations basically stopped. US continued with Mex who is under the gun to sign before the new admin comes in there and upends anything. Based on what I'm seeing there is no such presumption that Canada has agreed to anything that's in the US-Mex bilateral.

Oh no - by all means - I have no presumption that Canada will agree either.

Also unclear is what happens if Trump submits a US-Mex pact to congress. Authority might not exist for it to supplant NAFTA. Also congress will have to pass law to conform in addition to the Senate ratification which before the end of the year seems like a rather tall task.

It's even a major retreat from the 5 year automatic sunset that Trump demanded and Mexico/Canada said no way to. I think any expiration date mandatory or not is going to be unpopular with a lot of politicians given the headaches it could cause down the road.

Check out where they have applied tariffs on US goods. Trudeau is no genius, but he's fricking Mensa compared to Trump. And Trump is making it more likely Trudeau will get reelected.
