You may be right, but is damn hard to reconcile the idea that they were just expecting a "protest", which is the same as the BLM march over summer, and how disparate the two different scenarios played out.

The difference is that tRump and his administration ordered the additional troops. On Wednesday they actively tried to not let any NG troops get there.

They arrested guys with guns heading to disrupt the count in PA.
They had to escort poll workers in other states.
Numerous death threats.

There was ample evidence that should have suggested they at least had the guard close and standing by.

I guess my general anger boils down to the racism of it all. It's why armed men stormed the Michigan court house. These authorities hear liberals or BLM are coming and plan for war. They hear right wing extremists are coming, you know the group that was labeled as the actual dangerous domestic terrorist group and they go, "I'm sure it'll be fine. Those are good people ."

I think the error was more mundane. It's the fact that the capitol has literally never been breached by domestic insurrectionists in our entire history and they likely believed it was unthinkable and that it would never be attempted, at least not by any large number of people all at one time. They were wrong and it's a good bet this mistake will not be made again.

as i understand it, the Capitol was better protected during the Amy Coney Barrett confirmation than it was during the election certification. that isn't just a mundane error.

I think we really need to avoid inventing narratives from 17 second, out of context clips. That's how conspiracy theories form, and we don't need more of those.

A lot of other clips show police being overwhelmed and beaten, and many landed in the hospital, and one died trying to stop these people.

Just like the outdoor clips that show calmly opening barriers and letting them stroll through. I think that creates a false narrative that the were just allowed in.

Though that just suggests the error was in failing to prepare properly and have sufficient force in place so as to _not_ be overwhelmed. It's not as if it wasn't very obvious what was coming as most of the "plotting" took place on public forums.

Indeed the authorities could have been forgiven for, before the event, expecting it to be even worse than it turned out to be - given what came out about those Michigan crazies with the idea of knapping the governor, whose plan called for assembling a large mob to 'storm the state capitol', enabling the main gang to take legislature members hostage and publicly execute them.

Read most of it, damm, that dude is full on crazy, "trump will be inaugurated on 01/20", for some reason they cannot grasp the fact that Pence lacked any authority whatsoever to change the result of the election and was bound to fulfill his role has a simple reader of the vote tallies.

I agree. But the policeman telling the press person, "you can't go in. No one can go in" is crazy. They could be overwhelmed. They could be letting the protestors in. The conclusion is the same, it was mismanaged. They either weren't prepared or they didn't care.

My problem is to tell the press person she can't go in while clearly not telling that to the other people.

Police will always tell you that you can't do something that's illegal if asked. Ask a cop if you can shoot fireworks on the 4th, the answer will be no, but they won't ever stop you if you do.
