How two critical actions saved lawmakers. We have seen them before.
Officer Goodman leading them away from an open door where Mike Pence is with his Family. If that Mob went in that direction. It would have been a disaster. Bravery and incredibly smart thinking on his part. This time it's showing with overhead tracking diagram.
Later Mob was trying to break through to the House Gallery (Floor was evactuated) where many house members are still sheltering. Plains clothes officer was guarding a choke point. He couldn't let any of the mob through that chokepoint. Ashley Babbit was shot as the first one trying to breach. House members heard the shot, and they can be heard saying removing your pins. Fearing the Mob was breaking through and didn't want to make it easy to identify them. After Babbit was shot, the rest of the House Member were evacuated.
Then it was mostly a fight to push rioters out of the building.
That's an excellent recap of the events. I know I'm on record as not being keen on cops shooting people, even under extreme circumstances. But I do find myself thinking through various hypothetical counter-factuals - e.g. if this had been a black _but right wing_ mob (improbable as that sounds), or a group of mostly white anarchists or communists, say. And in most cases I'm pretty sure there would have been more shooting.
Cannot get over how little one ever expected to see such scenes from the US. The level of failure (in preparation and management) by the authorities is just utterly incredible. (Edit - though I still think there's a non-zero possibility there was active collusion by some of those in authority)

It was simply inconceivable that any POTUS would hurl an angry mob against Congress in a bid to stay in power. Trump forced a paradigm shift as witnessed by current preparations for the inauguration.
