a permit for what? hiking?

you have to have a permit to hike?????

In a lot of places, you need a permit for more than day-use, yes. I've definitely had my permit checked while backpacking. Have you not backpacked much, or does this only happen in the west?

i've never backpacked. it just seemed silly to have to have a permit to do so.

The permit is cheap. It mostly just forces you to check in with your itinerary so they know where you are in case they gotta start lookin' for your body. In a few crowded parks, it lets them limit the numbers of people in the park to what they think the park can handle. Fine by me, since I like to see few people when I'm backpacking.

I wish I were in a position of power. I'd abuse it all I could. It's the only way to really enjoy having it.

It, um, turns out they can write you a ticket for shooting off fireworks in a National Forest.

Best case, I would say he would just give you a ticket and a fine. Worse case would be an escort out, or to the proper area.

I'm going to a couple National Forests in NM. The Gila website says no permit is needed. Lincoln does not specify hiking but lists other permits. How do I find out if I need a permit for hiking?

Depending on the Ranger/USFS employee, you can be asked to leave, you can be escorted out, you may be cited and fined, and can even be made to appear before a Federal Magistrate (who generally issues a hefty fine). If you get beligerent enough, they can call in law enforcement and even have you arrested over it...

The permit system (not in every National Park or Forest) helps keep track of who's going in, where they're going, and how long they're planning to be there. This helps to make sure no one gets lost or hurt and never finds their way back out. It also helps to keep crowding down in some of the more popular hiking areas.

I suspect that they would have you escorted somehow to a designataed area in which a permit can be obtained if you fail to show proper identification and the permit itself.

I think in some cases has to do with overcrowding. Most places want you to submit an itinerary so they can keep track of where you have been and to spread out the hikers.

Duh, you have to have a permit to carry a firearm so why wouldn't you need a permit to hike in a park?

The ludicrousity of the people on this site is astounding.

Not quite - In many parks, the first and foremost reason for permits is to make sure the backcountry is not being overused or crowded. Any other benefits are secondary to keeping a quota.
