L and Q are Dept of Energy clearances.

L is the lowest level. Basically if you have a credit score above 300 and don't admit to have been smoking pot the morning of your interview, you're gold.

Q is the real deal. They ask you how long you dated Bin Laden, your street addresses since you were born (the hardest question by far), and if you smoked pot in high school.

So what's the deal with the drug questions? If you admit to have done some years and years ago, do they throw you out on your ass?

No. The biggest thing is just to be open and honest about anything they ask.

No, and if you lie in your SSBI, they will find out, and you will not get your clearance.

Depends on the job. At sandia labs in 1994 they were very thorough. They spoke to my parents, friends, past girl friend . Any history of drug use was a disqualification. Any crimes committed except for something like parking was a disqualification.

The way it was explained to me was that if you used drugs in the past or did something like a lot of speeding tickets it showed your disregard for established rules and lack of respect for authority.

Yep. They look for things that don;t match up. Even something small can hold it up and/or cause you not to get it.

Had a person say I use to steal for my dads shop. So my clerance at first was denied. I wrote a letter explainng how that was not even possible as I did not live anywhere near my dad and the only "shop" he has was for his heating and air business. Let alone the fact that shrink went way up after I left.

My friend was going for a TS, and he pretty much got automatically rejected since he admitted to smoking marijuana twice. It all depends on who is reviewing the application.

I know and can say. Fed. Gov. Clerance is not some top secret information. I do HR type work for State Dept and have to get clerance for people all the time.

Also each agency has different rules and also depends on your job and what you will see and do.

That's not true. People who know might not want to post it here because these threads are often created by people who wish to game the system, though.

There are procedures and guidelines, but the investigation can be somewhat subjective. If you're denied, you can get a lawyer and appeal.

The bottom line is this. It's best to be honest. Even if it works out that you do not get your clearance, it is best to be honest in every stage. The reason has to do with that subjectivity and discretion on the part of the investigator. First, if you lie, you're likely to get caught. These folks are thorough. They talk to enough people that an inconsistency will arise and they'll go down that path. They are NOT lazy. Second, the investigator, while not being the one that makes the actual determination -- they just collect the facts -- can be on your side. For instance, say you lie to him, he investigates, and catches you in said lie. He writes this all up and your clearance application is denied. That's it, game over, you will likely NEVER hold a security clearance no matter how much time passes. Integrity is a big factor. On the other hand, you're honest with him about past drug use, you tell him you smoked some pot in college and got caught peeing on a cop car. Maybe it was years ago, but you admit to it. In the course of his investigation, he may determine that it's not likely that you'll pass. Instead of submitting your application to the adjudicative body, he suggests to you that they simply stop your application, and maybe wait a few years so that more time has passed and you don't get in any more trouble in the meantime. A few years later, you get your clearance, because stopping the application is not the same as the adjudicators denying it.

Security clearances enable a great deal of earning potential, and at the higher levels especially, are to be taken very seriously. Do not lie, it might fuck up your prospects far into the future.

Also, the illustration above wasn't me, but it is very similar to someone that I know.

Top Secret is the highest. But just because you have a TS does not mean you can just walk into any place and/or look at anything.

Secret goes back 5 years and TS goes back 10 years and they go more indepth with interviews.

I have TS/SCI. That information is not classified. What, exactly, the requirements are depends on the sponsor of the clearance. Everyone has different criteria. But one thing that will always disqualify you is lying.

@swjaste, I wasn't talking about the actual app process, more about clearance levels.

@Marlin, I don't disagree! the TS "place holder" is the highest. Anyways, if you want to talk more, PM me but I won't post here.
