Ari Fleischer said "today is the moment of truth, the diplomatic window has closed".
Bush to speak at 8 tonight. Here we go....

Not particulary surprising - as it would not have gone through.

In the worst case scenario (for the US) not only would France and whoever else veto, but they could lose the overall count also. This would undeniably show a big "thumbs down" from the international community. They would avoid that at all costs.

Well you know what they say;

"If you can't win a democratic vote, don't have one at all." What's the point of the whole charade anyway if the outcome will be the same no matter what happens?

The UN chose it's own demise when they rendered themsleves useless. If they won't back up their own words, then they are indeed an inept organization.

a pitty since the undecided members of the UN security council have been very keen on the idea of giving Iraq 30-45 days to disarm, UK has been thinking about that benchmark idea and france starting to like the 30-45 days idea also, then this not to mention without UN support UK politics will go crazy along with Spain

the future ahead looks indeed very dark

I guess the UN just wasn't important enough to waste such time on...

It is a shame. Even France indicated a 30 day timeline would be acceptable. It seems we were near an amicable resolution, with muc more financial backing. Ahh well.

I thought they already had about 10 years.
Why would they change in 30 more days?

my thoughts exactly. why join the UN if you will only abide by it only when it suites your needs?

a 30 day timeline for WHAT though. more inspections? They were getting nowhere, Iraq was leading them around by the nose. Iraq only offered evidence when Bush said "iraq has xxx and they never told us!" The threat of force was working but not fast enough. 30 days would have done nothing for the inspections and just made the war more costly for the US troops.

I thought that even if they didn't change their minds - it would be an opportunity to try to avoid war and to get the international community onside with the "military perspective".

I think the point was, it was great while it lasted but it no longer holds up its own ideals by backing up its resolutions - so the security council is irrelevant now.

30 more days for the inspectors to give a final decision, 30 days and within a timetable with benchmarks for Saddam to realy show that he means to disarm, if not then war, that would probably be the best solution for all sides
