Are you attempting to argue that China isn't civilized?

Geez the endless casual xenophobia or out right racism in P&N from certain posters is tiresome.

Are you trying to argue that the CCP is Civilized?

Has nothing to do with race. You are tiresome.

The cheap stuff doesn't interest me as much as the other things I mentioned.
IDK. Low wage growth and insufficient funding of gov't are pretty important to me, aside from other societal detriments. These are not all caused by US/China trading relationships, but are nonetheless, terrible side effects.
We just need someone smarter to improve our standing via appropriate domestic policies and foreign negotiation. Joe might do the former, but the latter is a tough sell for the reasons you mention.

Why the hell would China want North Korea?

Exactly.

China already owns North Korea - it protects them, feeds them (enough to keep them from outright starving, anyway), and keeps what is otherwise their joke of an economy going. In return, China gets a live laboratory to see the limits on how far brainwashing can be pushed on an entire populace under an authoritarian power structure.

North Korea is also like China's schizophrenic middle finger to the world. Do something the Chinese don't like, and NK just conveniently happens to fire off yet another missile to distract everybody. A missile, half of the parts for which probably came from China anyway. I doubt that bunch of braindead cultists, on their own, could ever manage to manufacture anything more complicated than a bottle rocket without outside assistance.

To preempt any move toward reunification - if that seems to be a possibility. As @Steltek points out, China uses NK as much as they can (there are limits though) - so far things are manageable.

reunification is still better than taking it over.

Not for China.
Why? It would take a shitton of money to get NK up to China's standard of living and they will no longer have a buffer either way. Better to let SK pay for that.

Because China is paranoid, and prefers NK be a buffer between itself and the western aligned SK. Hence, the limited support it gives to DPRK (so they don't become a threat to China either). Nasty realpolitik, there is no altruism here.
Korean reunification is more of an SK/USA desire.

And that is why I said China does not want NK at all.

Why the hell would China want North Korea?

Because one of China's big fears is having a democratic pro-America government on it's border as a neighbor. American radar and assets in South Korea is already a huge bone of contention, look at the tantrum they threw over THAAD.

It's true that China completely keeps NK's head above water. It's also true that Xi has been irritated in the past with Kim's 'unbalanced' sense of deference regarding that aid. He's gone along with the international community at times to signal his displeasure to NK, and other times has done it with a massive relocation of military power to their common border. I doubt the idea of taking over and installing a more compliant, less bombastic puppet regime has never been discussed in Beijing. I'd imagine it would be something less costly than annexation. They'd want to do it on the cheap because the real prize is Taiwan, not more of a stake in the Korean peninsula. The North Korean regime is why there is an American presence there as well. Scaling back Americas involvement in Asia is top of the list in Xi's spank bank.

Would it be costly? Of course. And China is into paying those kinds of prices if it means saving face and/or fulfilling their expansionist agenda.

I think my avatar is compelling me not to consider breaking out the shears.

This barber embargo sucks.
