The Pentagon added that "this strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans" ...
Yes, wacking a hornets nest will pacify them. What all smart people do.

And Putin has gotten another one of his wishes granted, with the blessing and best wishes of Trump's supporters of course.

Yep. This move will further alienate the US from its allies as they are unlikely to support our actions.

The thing is it doesn’t really matter. By all accounts he was a bad guy, but there are lots of bad guys in the world. Kim Jong Un is a bad guy - should we assassinate him?

The problem here is that this appears to be yet another case of thoughtless lashing out by an idiot who is too lazy to learn the possible consequences of his actions.
That bridge was crossed long ago by Bush, and we were warned once the counterbalance to Iran was eliminated this was coming one way or another, the blowback was inevitable just like the blowback called Trump for hollowing out of the middle class for more profits for the rich while establishment politicians gave lip service to the middle class for votes and favorable policies like tax loopholes for their rich benefactors instead.
Gas prices have been on the decline...time to kick up unrest in the middle east...
Let them, oil companies will just accelerate the end of their monopoly on energy and global pollution this time.

if iran wanted to get to trump they could wax a couple of his kids. They get protection but its not insane amounts of secret service. Im sure they are planning for that possibility.

I'm guessing but it's a pretty safe bet that this attack on Iraqi territory was done without any notice to the Iraqi government. Legally speaking US troops in Iraq are there at the invitation of the Iraqi government-it is quite likely that that invitation will be withdrawn in the upcoming days-resulting in the disintegration of Iraq into more sectarian violence, the accelerated resurgence of ISIS started with Trump's surrender of Syria and betrayal of our Kurdish allies (who were holding thousands of ISIS prisoners until Trump greenlighted the Turkish attacks on the Kurds).

In the meantime this is probably the single most effect step to end internal Iranian dissent (which had be rising) and unify Iran to create more trouble through it's proxies.

It's truly painful watching a middling checkers player trying to play chess against the pros.

So, Trump basically just declared war on Iran. Wonder if that buys Bolton's silence.

Trump has found his wag the dog moment. As noted his tweeting words to the effect, 'Watch for Obama to start a war with Iran to prop up his presidency' some years back? That's the way Trump thinks. Trump projects more than your local multiplex..

This will not be forgotten. Iran will retaliate. They will try to bait us and/or our allies into a mess.

How this plays out probably depends on Iraqi internal politics.

What was the name of this strike, 'Operation - Reelect Trump'?

Iran promisses REVENGE.
If I were Donald, I'd hang low for awhile.
Iran knows well what that ultimate revenge would be.
Nancy coming at Donald from one side, Iran from the other side, I'd say to Donald RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY.

Fuck everything about this. Hopefully this doesn't escalate and Trump gets kicked out come November.

You do know that the CIA killed their popularly elected leader the first time that the people of Iran overthrew the American puppet that was the Shah? Our contentious relationship with Iran didn't start until the Shah was overthrown the 2nd time and the Ayatollah was put into power by the people of Iran. Those same people would never have taken Americans hostage or put the Ayatollah into power if we hadn't killed the leader that they wanted.
Iran was a secular and rapidly westernizing society. The Ayatollah represented a religious backlash against it. He found allies amongst radical Marxist leftists who aligned with him along class warfare fault lines. This was against the backdrop of both America and the Soviet Union maneuvering to fill the power realignments caused in the wake of WW2 and accelerated by the Cold War. This story played out across the globe, from Vietnam to Cuba.

What happened in Iran is as if Bernie Sanders and Pat Robertson formed an alliance around a working class backlash against 1980s materialism.

A great many secular brilliant scientists fled Iran and landed in America.

Instead of remaining a puppet to America, Iran became a puppet of the Soviet Union. Do you think the working class of Iran are better off now?

In a sign of how well we thought through this action the Pentagon statement on the assassination gets the name of the organization he led wrong.

My guess (hope?) as to what happens next is either a large attack against US interests in the Middle East or a series of moderate attacks that are almost certainly caused by Iran but where Iran can give *wink wink* plausible deniability. That would give both parties a chance to de-escalate.

If Iran attacks directly I imagine Trump will feel the need to escalate yet again and then we may reach the point of no return.

This attack was a really bad idea. He was certainly an enemy of the United states, but the public assassination of a foreign leader is an act of war, and a war between US and Iran is the last thing the world needs.

We should all remember too that Trump inherited a situation with Iran that was stable and improving and he deliberately tore it up. Whatever happens going forward here it’s in large part Trump’s fault.

It will also probably be tough to resolve this situation as Trump has no credibility and has diplomatically isolated the US.

Tulsi Gabbard is against American military intervention and took meetings with Assad, an ally of Tehran. But you guys don’t like that for reasons.

As far as I can tell from the most recent thread people don’t like her because she didn’t defend the Constitution but you kept declaring we were all against her for other secret reasons.

Tehran’s been incrementally and increasingly asserting itself through assymetrical attacks from its proxies across the region, a network for which Soleimani was the mastermind and architect. You almost have to admire his consistent presence and influence over a region for which chaos and rapid power realignments is the status quo.

This is no doubt an escalation.

Pompeo is telling the news the intelligence community said there was an "imminent threat" from Soleimani and essentially that he had to be taken out. Considering that what he did for a living was to create threats, often against our interests but sometimes for, I'm going to need a lot more specifics before taking him at his word about what was the rationale for doing it now. Especially given the proclivity of this admin to reflexively lie about everything down to the color of toilet paper.

I really suspect Trump was super aggravated by the embassy protest and ordered him killed without giving the slightest thought to the broader consequences of the action. Whatever happens next is entirely at the doorstep of the president and his supporters.
