Breaking news, I can't seem to find any sources other than the 6 o'clock news. The US Treasury has begun to issue the 30 year bond again. Basically intending to refinance the US debt.

What do people think of this move; I find it interesting as the reason the bond was removed was due to good economic times and a surplus budget situation.

To be honest, I didn't even know the government stopped issuing them. I guess my Macroecon book is a little too old.

It seems like a decent way to finance our debt.

Good move. Though uptake from most like you and I wil depend on the bond rates when they start selling them out. If the bond yield curve is still fairly flat, there isn't much reason to take a 30yr over say a 10yr, but if the curve rises then there could be a potentially nice investment for a younger worker to long.

You're better off investing in the Euro or Yuan.

Bottom line in the 2nd piece is that long term interest rates have to rise in order to make this 30 year bond a good buy for the end consumer. As long as interest rates continue to rise, long term bonds and even bonds in general aren't a great investment.

Interesting how the bond was removed due to "good economic times" when it was after the 911 stock crash.

I love it when people who haven't invested a $ in their life talk about what to invest in. Remember that when you read the posts people.

I think once we know who Greenspans replacement is, it will cast a better light on exactly how beneficial this will be. Seeing as how it would appear the Fed is just starting an interest rate hike cycle this is a good idea. One could argue it sheds light on which way they are leaning.

I find it interesting as the reason the bond was removed was due to good economic times and a surplus budget situation under Clinton.

Of which was destroyed and getting worse by Bush.

The numbers don't lie, history will doom the Bush Regime.

Can only hope the U.S. survives it but not looking very good at the moment.

Surplus budget situation. Where did you get that? We are still running a $300 billion+ deficit...

Actually the 30 year bond was active during Clinton's entire term.
