This, if done right, will trigger huge advancements in large robot warfare. It is a great time to be alive! Somewhere someone with a lot of money should be figuring out how to create an international giant fighting robot league.

This would be amazing!

I'm saddened to see Japan is still making flashy robots instead of something useful. Apparently they didn't even have robots to send in place of humans during their meltdown so we sent them a shipment of our robots. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2011/mar/29/japan-nuclear-plant-us-robots

To be fair, the only reason the US has been developing these robots is to handle our own fuck-ups as well. Per that article:

The department of energy has developed a number of remotely operated robots designed to clear up radioactive waste from department of energy test weapons sites, Lyons said.

The earliest versions were developed in the wake of the Three Mile Island accident in 1979 when robots were sent in to get a view of the damaged reactor, and to suck up radioactive water and partially melted fuel.

The creation of these robots were spurred by our own Three Mile Island accident, and have been further developed for cleanup of weapon test sites (something most other countries don't have to deal with). So it seems silly to blame Japan for not having such robots ready when the only reason we have them is reactions to similar problems.

I found it ironic that a high tech country that loves robots like Japan didn't have robots capable of working in dangerous environments. The same Japan that plans on having 40% of their electric generated from reactors by 2017. :\

I think that's why both are on treads or wheels. Still though, they were built with very different design goals in mind. The American one was supposed to be a prototype for a specific kind of live action FPS, while the Japanese one was built to be more general purpose. The US team will need to completely redesign their arms at least, and possibly almost the whole vehicle as well. It wouldn't be very fun if 7 tons of metal hit the ground after a few strikes.

How is this fight gonna happen if it's taijitsu only in 5 ton behemoths and still be able to guarantee pilot safety
