USB 2.0 external enclosure for $78-best price over internet

I have been looking for this for a long time. linkpca has the usb 2.0 480Mbps speed external all-in-one enclosure for only $78. The lowest price found on Pricegrabber is above $92. amazon has it at $113.99. pricewatch's best price is 90. It also lower than the auction price on eBay.

These enclosures are always so expensive. I just bought a FireWire one from someone in the FS/FT forums.

That is the Andara enclosure which can be had at Overstock. com for the same price here. It is a good price you found, except there are several different coupon options which can be used at Overstock(i.e. 20 off 60 for first time buyers or 10% off) these coupon codes can be found on many locations. I got one of these from Overstock for 59.99 + 3.95 for s&h. It works really well, but is a cheaper grade of plastic than some of the more expensive cases. Get it at Overstock!!!!

overstock sucks. they provide only 90 days warranty. I once bought a Hard drive from them which worked only 97 day than dead. I try to get a repalcement from them, but ........in a word-totally sucks!!!!!

it would seem to me that you should have went to the manufacturer for any form of warranty issues, most stores do not offer any type of warranty on items they are merely selling, unless it is specifically that stores brand. After the 30 day (or 14 day return in some cases) is past, the retailer has no obligation to you whatsoever. Do not confuse this with a stores attempt to sell you an "extended warranty", that is a for profit hedge that the retailer hopes to gain from as they believe the odds are that the product is of good enough quality to survive the warranty period.

anyhow, I have a 24x Pacific Digital cdrw (lite-on) in this case and it works flawlessly with a usb 2.0 upgrade card I installed. As I stated before, it is of cheaper quality plastic than the $100 external cases which are common, but I love it anyway!!!!

How does this thing work? Does it take any 3.5/5.25 drive? I mean, I have a SCSI CDRW drive sitting in my old desktop that I don't really use now and want to make that drive portable, but I somehow doubt that this would be possible. Is this entirely for E/IDE interface drives? Would there be other (better) options if wished to use my internal SCSI drive externally?

This is an IDE only drive enclosure. For your SCSI drive you would need something more like This. This SCSI enclosure is only ~$16.

One of the reasons that the IDE drive enclosures are usually more expensive than SCSI enclosures is that SCSI enclosure only have to provide power and a cable connect to the drive. IDE enclosures have to have special hardware in them to communicate over the firewire or USB bus.

The cost of the External SCSI drive goes up quickly when you add the cost of the SCSI cable, and the SCSI adapter that needs to be in the system. I.E. You are not going to be able to cheeply add your SCSI drive to a laptop.

Why not get the 5.25" enclosure from CompGeeks?
It is only USB 1.1 but it does have FireWire 1394a for 69$.
A 3.5" model is 65$.

I hope that Firewire pulls ahead in the bus wars. It's the better standard, but USB seems to be the dominant force.
